Question 6V92 Rebuild and hotrod thread

It's time for some more HP! Nothing too nuts, but a little nuts is fine. 425hp seems reasonable. I solicit your advice and recommendations.

Does anyone have a DDC Field Service Data Book they can share, or scan, or let me scan in? If not I will pick one up on eBay. I think it holds many answers.

I currently have 9F90 injectors according to the plate. It's a silver 92, but it doesn't have a bypass blower. It's rated at 335hp supposedly. The turbo needs a rebuild, it's passing oil. I have a reman blower with a 100% bypass to install as well.

I would like to purchase injectors, but a bit confused about what to get. Different spray patterns, etc. Is it possible to have my existing injectors reman'd and changed around or is that not a "thing" with these kinds of injectors?

What cam differences are there? I see there were some different ones available. I'm not above swapping cams if I know what I'm getting for it.

I assume I have the "short" ports in my cylinder liners. Am I sacrificing much by not using the tall ones? They are 0.100" taller. I am not intending to do an in-frame and I doubt this change is worth it for the power.

I know there are OEM turbo choices that will work for this combo, but I'm thinking about what it would take to run a VGT turbo from something like an S60. Mounting it is the hard part, but nobody makes a turbo that mounts on the blower top plate like the original one. I can CNC a new top plate and possibly mount the turbo with the exhaust flange. The idea with the VGT turbo is to get some response down low, but also to run a better all-around turbo. Or I could run a BW S400 variant with no VGT. Same amount of work, simpler, inexpensive great turbos, and I can spec out whatever I want.

If I redo the top plate on the blower I might as well build an air-to-water heat exchanger into it. I could do a CAC, but running the water setup is more efficient and easier to route water lines around. This should be worth some ponies and just make it run cooler.

My cooling system is really good, better than any 6V coach has ever had, so I'm ahead of the game there.

Any transmission changes? I have the MT654CR and I think it's in good shape. Hard to really know, but it shifts nice and isn't cooked. I will be adding a cooler to this (currently none, but the fluid runs through the engine oil heat exchanger for some amount of cooling). I will go above its book rating, but that's also at 80,000 lbs IIRC. My gut feel is that the trans will be OK if I don't abuse it.

Gardner had 360hp nozzles in his PT I believe. Started making oil due to cracked sleeve, back to the 330 units, he was sad, liked the 360's better, he might chime in.
Firetruck tune up to 400, then there's the cooling thing and the EGT thing, won't know until you try.

Andy,
I have the service manual in digital format I can send you via email. Will do it when I get home this evening. I think you need to tweak your governor first and see what comes of that.. from the sounds of it, you are not getting everything that you should be out of your engine. Can you get a picture of the other blue tag in front of the one with all the spec numbers on it? That tag should tell you what cam you have in it, and it will also say what the original HP of that engine was. Once you have that then can look at the tables and see what injector up you should go to. I would also see about deleting the aftercooler.. I have wanted to do that and add a CAC instead. You will be in there anyways when you pull the blower. I was doing some research on this a while ago and now I forgot what I learned.. I think you may just be able to blank off the coolant line to the aftercooler.. maybe someone else knows.. seems like Randy did some of this stuff to his 6v92 maybe he will chime in.
As far as a trans it would be nice to put the HT740 in there.. I think they are a little more stout.. but that is a big ordeal.. I would say stick with the MT654 and see how it handles things..

I have a lot of cooling system overhead since I did all the fan hydraulic stuff, so I think I'm good there for a nice bump.

A good intercooler would help EGTs. Have to watch it for sure. What do you think about the transmission?

I would never remove the aftercooler. It's doing a lot more good than you think. If you thought you could get the discharge temp under coolant temp then maybe there's a reason to remove it. But that isn't likely even with a CAC.

I'll try to get the rest of the numbers. 335hp is what the math says I'm making based on the weight and speed down the road. Give or take. The gov will get turned up, and that bypass blower is supposedly good for 35hp by itself.

I have a service manual, but I want the data book that shows all the technical data for injectors, turbos, cams, blowers, all that stuff that isn't anywhere else.

Curious to see how this goes. I wouldn't mind some extra HP, but I'd be curious to see how your cooling holds up. In 90+ temps running hard my temps creep up. I'm pretty confident in my cooling system based on the work the PO did.

Might want to get the piston/rod assembly in your hand, hold it and look @ it and wonder how much more abuse you'd really want to apply.

I gotcha, I have heard of hot rodders ditching the aftercooler... but I suppose they do something on the front end to keep it cool.. not sure what.. Yea I do not know of the manual you are talking about. But the blue tag on your bus will tell you the original HP.. mine is 330..

Here is my tag.. look right in the middle of the top tag that is where the HP is:

Marine 6v92 are rated up to 625hp. But they have unlimited cooling.

Hot rodding diesels does not work in British Columbia. Cannot pull a long hill and shed the extra heat. Fine for a 3/4 ton pickup with an empty box and big tires, but nothing with any weight to it. So even if you are from a flat state be prepared that every time you travel over a pass you will be eyeballing your pyro and temp gauge. It does not make for a comfortable holiday.
