Default Retarder unreliable - ZF Ecomat

The retarder operation on my SP36 has changed from being somewhat reliable with a flickering LED to perfectly reliable with LED showing operation in the first hour (or so) of run time and then almost non existent thereafter.

I cleaned the terminals on the air switch which were in terrible shape and thought that might have been it. I believe that the retarder switch is the one that does not look like the brake light/cruise cancel air switch in the LF bay. No change.

I would love to replace it with regular relays if it indeed uses one of the little PMMI micro relay boxes, if only I knew where it was. I have also found a bank of four numbered relays whose function I cannot determine behind the center dash drawers and wonder if these are replacements for one of the PMMI boxes or if this coach was perhaps built with regular relays instead?

I will change the air switch if there is confirmation that the "one of these is not like the other" is indeed the one for the retarder. I also want to verify that the hand control lever relies upon this same switch.

I think I've solved my intermittent retarder issue - some contact cleaner on the ZF shift buttons was the trick. Evidently there was a contact not making good connection with the D button depressed or something interrelated within the control unit. Retarder has been working reliably since making this discovery.

If you have an FC or SP with the Ecomat and your LED is just flickery in on or off or on retarder, this may be the answer, unless you actually have what I thought I had (dodgy relay or similar).

Fuel requested, even a minor or accidental or false reading touch to the fuel pedal will prompt a jake from retarding valves. Rpm values also drop a jake. Wonder if cruise controll would toy with the works

SP/FC ZF Ecomat is an internal transmission retarder only, not a jake, just for clarity.

problem solving always assumes operator ignorance and that the shut down is a process by design. Most times intermitting issues are prompts not completed and my ignorance to the proper method. Could be you don't know what you are doing wrong and 'not working is a intermittent operator process failure.

Chip do you lock out gears on the regular, and produced the same results before?

Locking out to a lower gear to stay out of OD. Curious if it was related just to D or the lower numbers too.

Coincidentally, I found it when I cycled down the gears on a slowdown (taking an exit), but the retarder works no matter what.
