Question Kohler 12.5 KW - voltage regulator

I am in need of the voltage regulator on the back side of the generator right behind the cover on the generator frame. It is a circuit board with Kohler number 233910 on it. Part number 233909 may also work. Part is no longer available thru Kohler. If you have or know of someone who has an old broken down Kohler with that part in it let me know.

I think that regulator kit #228675 should work on your 12.5 Kohler/Perkins.

They are expensive at around $350 here:

This is the one installed on my Kohler. Unfortunately we blew out the frist new one before discovering the problem. (the rear bearing retainer strip had slipped and was intermittently shorting the slip ring to ground) After repairing the bearing problem a second regulator has been running fine, well over 200 hours. It is mounted on the outside of the case as it is a bit larger than the original.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I already had a price from Loftin Equip. for that part number $343.20. I am trying to avoid that cost. I am also concerned about blowing it again if I can't determine the cause and then doubleing this cost. There are seven wires on the old unit and this replacement has only five. This dummy isn't sure what to do with the extra wires. Right now the board is in the hands of my engineer son who thinks he can wire around the burned off terminal and get the old unit to work Besides he works cheap, just a few beers.

Just make sure you pay off with the beers AFTER he works on it.....

Hope you get it working.

I went through this drill with a new regulator but had no issues swapping wires over, it was exactly the same, so something isn't right. Also, I HIGHLY caution you on just throwing the new one in without knowing why it went in the first place. My generator guy warned me of this as well. No warranty will be honored on the part if you didn't make sure something didn't cause it to burn out, or something. Usually, regulators don't just "go bad". Mine wasn't bad, I was trying to save time/money on a new gennie by dialing down the voltage, which unfortunately didn't work for me. Again, I really suggest you get someone other than your son to work on it. No offense, but you could well be spending that money twice and still not have the real problem solved. Electrical problems can be real easy, or a real pain to solve, especially without the right tools and know-how.

I wonder how far away Ralph Fullenwider is from you? Ernie can probably help you out with that, I think they are close friends and both from somewhere in Texas...?
