Default Yanmar/Koehler 12.5 Shutting Down

Hi all-

The Yanmar engine in my 1988 XXV WB shuts down after running for a period of time. Sometimes it will run for an hour before shutting down, sometimes it can be 10 minutes. Right before it dies the rpms will drop and it stumbles. There are times when it stumbles and it catches itself. It will start right back up but if it's running for a while it does shut off a short time later.

I replaced the engine fuel filter. My next thought was to change the RACOR. I don't know when or if that was ever changed. Or could it be something else?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

if you don't know if the racor was ever changed, do change it.
Do you have more than a 1/4 tank of fuel? & don't depend on the fuel gauge for an accurate reading.

Thanks Bill! I am going to change the RACOR. There is a little less than a 1/4 tank (I think) in it though in the past I've had less and never had an issue.

Change the filter and add more fuel. You probably have less fuel in your tank
then you think you have.

Always start with the simple stuff like filters and fluids. Make sure the racor bowl is full to the top when you change it. Don't forget to check the air filter too.

Off the fuel bandwagon, into other thinking....
No electrical load kicking on that you can associate directly to it? Fridge compressor, Kickboard heaters, water heater, pipe tape heaters... any of these failing can momentarily pull heavy current. (and/or get very hot!) A heavy load can try to stall the genny.
Or a thermostat is kicking it off as it is sensing it running borderline hot.

The stumbling makes me think it's fuel related. I would first change the racor filter then check to make sure the electric lift pump that's down by the spin on filter is working. When my lift pump went out my generator had the same symptoms.

Sounds like a flakey electric fuel pump. Cheap and easy to replace. Or the power to the pump is flakey.

I had a similar problem with my powertech which turned out to be a bad electric fuel pump
