Don't remember the day or year, but Finn's Inn was well maintained.
Good , fun, important stuff was getting done up front.

I've already taken advantage of the swing away radiator! A very cool modification indeed. There was some time before the Finns could get back to SC, so we filled it by reading through the whole pbase site as well as the many relevant threads that John had posted over the years...it made things easier when it came time to pick it up, and I always try to consult him (his posts/site) first when I'm trying to figure something out. It's going great so far.


Feel free to fill the thread with comments/pics/stories of John and the bus. I enjoy reading it all.

There are many many Finn & Finn's Inn stories,
Most are very laughable, even those not so funny at the time, are now history and are really funny now.

The Bud coach was for sale on ebay,and i was going to buy it as a flipper coach.
John posted on the old yahoo forum he would like to have it and i told him i had planned on buying it,but if he wanted it i would stand down.
Thats not the first time i have done that!


John bought it and if he had not bought it,the WOG would have never come to pass.
John needed a dinette table and i had one and i was going to an auction in SC somewhere,John came over and met me and i delivered the table to him there.


He was still working in his flag car business (escort service for trucks!) and he was living in a converted bus,it was an old international gas pusher,i don't know if it was a schoolie or a Gov bus or what,i never did see it.
He was working on the Bird and living in the converted bus and working on the road for days at a time.
His health was pretty good and he was getting stuff done.


He was wanting to retire and he had some heart issues and with a stint or two he was back to normal,but i think that was a deciding factor for him retiring.
One retired he was on the road and living in the bird and spent many weeks at my place,working on the bird.

and all kinds of other stuff,he was good at taking pics and his pbase site show cases the work we did that he did to record it.

Finn sure did save my behind with the post of the Rad flush. I followed that post as I needed to do the same. He took it like a champ. Not sure I would be able to do the same. Great guy and missed.

Yes, back in my flying days (Cessna P206) we heard of more people trashing an engine by running too lean in order to save a few gallons of fuel. The ol saying was "fuel is cheap" and it really was, all things considered

So we went through the entire bus this weekend, pulled all the spares and parts out, cleaned all the cubbies/basements/stormor, and put everything into a searchable spreadsheet, which makes it nice. Also on the spreadsheet is the fluid inventory as well as a filter/capacity cheatsheet for when I need to do things, I can consult and see how many gallons of what and what filter without having to crawl under and check.


I have been told that pics or it didn't happen, so here is the DEH-80PRS in place of the kenwood, and I removed the graphic eq as well. The dangly switch is for the flag lights on the roof, and I will be building an entire new panel to cover the hole once I determine what, if anything else, will be above my head.




The screen door was missing screen up top and torn on the bottom, so the Mrs' took it apart, rescreened where possible, patched on the curvy piece, and reinstalled.






Lastly, the generator woes are still going. I have an oil leak at the safety switch as well as a fuel leak at the line discharge from the pump. I went after the oil leak first, as I wanted to change the oil as well. The issue is with the powertech specified Nason SM-19a-10r switch, which is normally open, single pole single throw 9 psi shutdown. I had a slow leak from the base where the switch screws into the brass, and it looks like some of the RTV was coming out. Luckily I found a replacement when doing the inventory, and got super excited to swap it out. Unfortunately, the brand new one immediately started seeping from the set screw hole as pictured.






I took the old one apart because I like to see how things work and then fix them, and this is a wholly flawed design in my opinion. Basically, the black part (painted silver on the one in my hand) is the switch itself, and it's plastic. It is threaded down into the brass coupler that drops it to 1/8 npt for screwing into the block. Because it's plastic, when you tighten the set screw, it puts force on the side which pushes the threads apart and allows for oil to seep up to the set screw hole. Additionally, you have to rely on RTV as shown in the picture. If you thread the plastic all the way to the bottom, the brass couple actuates the switch and it no longer functions. All of this fun can be had for the low, low price of $75 special order, as I can't find any place at all that sells these things off the shelf. Enough of that trouble meant that it had to go, so I started looking for an alternative, off the shelf replacement that was better designed.



After many much digging, calls to Airline (Nason distributor) and calls to wells, I came up with the Wells/Duralast PS114, which is normally open, SPST, cuts off at 8 psi, and retails for $9.79 at Autozone. You can source this by telling them you want a duralast ps114, vehicle application is an '83 K5 Blazer.



Unfortunately, the local autozone didn't have this in stock, and neither did napa, oreilly or advance, so I went instead with a Wells/Duralast PS122. This is a 3 prong, DPST switch wherein terminal 2 is normally closed to ground and opens at pressure, and terminals 1&3 are normally open and close at pressure. As a replacement for the Nason, you would just use 1 & 3, and pressure is 12 psi. Using those terminals would shut down the engine in a low pressure situation. Terminal 2 is normally closed to ground at rest, and opens at 7 psi. You could use this on the negative leg of a dummy light if you wanted, but I just went with it because it is what they had in stock. As an added advantage, it was only $5.95 and is a much sturdier switch (than the Nason, both Wells switches are comparable) that I can replace anywhere on the road. It does necessitate the switch from ring to spade terminals, but I can whip that up tomorrow. Vehicle application is an '85 AMC Eagle.



I'll post pics in the future...it was getting dark as I was testing function via DMM/jumper wires, so I have to finish the job and then see about that fuel leak.

Nice work on finding an updated and more-robust part for the switch. Funny that the Chevy Truck part was not on the shelves, yet the AMC car part was!

Thanks! There was another 3 prong on the shelf too...from a Vega! I went with the AMC because of the lower profile. I think the 3's are more popular because they provide both the light and the shutoff, which is necessary when racing. When I crossed the vega p/n, everything that came up was $30 safety switches from summit and the likes identical to the vega part.



Work on the bus has been slow as I finish out my last commitments at work. I have been trying to DX every night...getting solid reception but no luck reaching out. I think the start battery is still in a bad condition from being left dead for months, and I'm not sure if I should try and refurbish it somehow, or just replace with a new 4D. I did pick up some tinned marine 12/3 to run straight to the battery for radio supply/neg/ground, but will try tonight via a Pyramid Gold Regulated PSU to see if that helps at all.



Anybody have any thoughts on reconditioning a battery vs replacing it?

If the battery has been dead as long as you indicate, save yourself the heartache and frustration and just replace it.
