Default Oil leak under dash

Hello all,

I have an minor oil leak under dash dropping to floor near high beam switch. Cant find source from front access panel or beneath dash or beneath the IL panel from above.

I 'm thinking its related to the genset oil pressure gauge. Genset seems to be working fine except for the oil pressure gauge... fresh oil plenty of output and it sounds right. This is now reading real low pressure and its increasingly lower reading seems to correspond with an increase in the drip which I estimate to be now at about .25 tsp every couple days. This is a Yanmar-Kohler 12.5 arrangement with low hours.

Any ideas?

Thanks - NH Bill

If your Bird is like ours your genny oil pressure is electrical not mechanical. I think the only other oil in that area is power steering fluid. Possible leak at one of the hoses at steering sector?

Hi Rick,

I do have a electrical oil pressure gauges. However, I am wondering if there are small oil lines running to a point under that dash and some kind of sending unit that transfers to electrical under there.

I recently replaced the high pressure and return lines on the ps. From what I know all these lines are below floor level at the steering column. The return lines run to the bottom of the ps reservoir inside the dog house. Everything associated with the ps is bone dry from what I can see so I don't understand how this could be related to ps. Additionally, the ps fluid is the pink ATF stuff and what is dropping from the dash is gray-black.

Thanks,

NH Bill

Bill

Hi Bill,

I seem to remember a posting about an oil pressure switch, could be for the hour meter or gage, probably Kysor/ Cadillac, but NAPA has a replacement.

Hi Bill,

This may be way off base but I had a similar oil drip in the dash of a pick-up truck I used to own. My leak turned out to be a loose fitting on the back of the Turbo Boost Gauge. It never leaked much (just a few drops) but what leaked was "black" engine oil. I'm not sure how or why the line had oil in it but after replacing the fitting I never had any problems with the Turbo or the gauge.

I think the only mechanical gauges in my lower dash is Air Pressure. The upper dash Racor fuel gauge is mechanical. The added Turbo Boost is also in the upper dash. It measures manifold air pressure and has no fluid in the line.

Hi Rick,

I hope you don’t think I was implying that a Turbo Boost Gauge line is normally filled with oil. On that pick-up truck I suspected that some oil for the Turbo leaked past the seal and due to the location of the Boost Pressure line connection it worked it’s way into the line and came out the loose fitting on the rear of the Boost Gauge. Most likely there’s something else leaking in Bill's dash but believe it or not I have had engine oil drip onto the floor out of a Turbo Boost Gauge line that should have had just air in it.
