Default 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Rally -- Casper, WY.

UPDATE: See Attachment for latest Casper Eclipse participants.

On August 21, 2017 there will be a total eclipse of the sun visible in the USA, the first this century. The next eclipse is 7 years after that in April, 2024. The last total solar eclipse visible in the USA was in 1991.

If you have never seen a total solar eclipse it should be on your bucket list, if you have seen one you know you want to see another!

Pat and I have seen 2 total solar eclipses and one annular solar eclipse. We are looking forward to seeing another in a few years.

Casper, WY is one of the best places in the country to see the eclipse. The town is close to the centerline so we won't have to travel to see the maximum duration, it is in a part of the country that is known for clear skies, it has a major east/west road just in case we have to run to clear skies, and the town is going all out to welcome eclipse viewers.

We are not alone in choosing Casper, the Astronomical League is having their annual convention there in 2017, and astronomers from all over the world are planning on going to Casper.

On top of that it is close to some very scenic parts of the country. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are an easy drive away, Glacier is a little farther and other places are enroute from either coast.

I expect there to be pre and post rally trips to these places.

The eclipse path starts on the Washington coast at about 9AM and ends in South Carolina at about 1:15PM. Totality in Casper happens about 11:43AM and the sun is about 52 degrees high in the sky.

Part of the reason Pat and I went to this area this year was to scout out a place to have a rally for the eclipse. We were a little late, most of the rv parks are either sold out or won't take reservations for another year. I contacted the Casper Chamber of Commerce and they recommended the fairgrounds. I was lucky enough to be able to reserve 30 full hookup sites there!

Heres a link to the fairgrounds RV sites: http://www.centralwyomingfair.com/campgrounds/

and the Chamber of Commerce page for the eclipse: http://visitcasper.com/do/wyoming-eclipse-fest-2017

If you are interested in seeing the eclipse with us let us know!

We are on the hook for the cost of the 30 sites so I would like a deposit...

The cost of each site is $150, 5 days or 1. We would like a $75 deposit when you sign up, non refundable, but transferable. The rest in a year or so...

There is a chance of getting more sites, but I am not sure how good a chance ;} I know that the chance will decrease as the eclipse gets closer.

To recap,

Casper, WY Eclipse Rally
