Default max power and egt temp

ok im not a expert but can afford a holiday inn but prefer a BB!!!!!

the max fuel a diesel engine can use is set in the pump at max load and rpm at factory....

but!!!!!!

who has a factory pump on there old cats???????

my 90 sp had a new engine when bill rowe got it and very few miles before i got it.....

so it wouldnt shift when the zf was in power mode...

i set the rpm(high idle) back to factory specs(3000 rpm) and its a new bus !

also my sp smokes too much for me and egt is too high when i have the tractor behind me~~~~

so i reset the fuel rate(thanks mike H) and rerouted the egt probe to before turbo as it should have been from factory and now i can run 1200-1250 and less smoke and hope better MPG.....

the factory egt probe is after turbo which is not a accurate reading for the job!!!!!!!

also the 300 cat and i bet the 250s have a max boost of 15psi....i run max at 13 now....was 16 !!!!!!

the tuning of a diesel is not for the credit card fixers..its trial and error to reset the pump and test drive....and do it again untill you know you got it......

also ran the valves and mine had 3 tight valves out of 16......they were exhaust valves...that was a burnt valve waiting to happen this summer with high egt and boost and hot weather......

...........
tune them engines this winter.....summer will be easy to enjoy!

Hi Woody,
I will need some instruction on how to set up the injector pump... Tell me how to do it... I want to adjust the valves too before heading to Maxton... I usually run between 12 and 13 on the boost... EGT's get up in the 900's... I get smoke when accelerating, even when I am not towing... I remember when I was at MH's, he told me how to make sure your throttle goes all the way to the stop... I have not done that as of yet, but I will once the snow melts and it gets a little warmer..

Tools needed-7/16" socket, a short extension or 2, and a screwdriver. If you look on the top of the pump you'll see a cover with 2 bolts that's about the same size as a Holley carb's float bowl. Fuel does come out sometimes, and does not need bleeding afterwards. Under it is a screw with a jamb nut. If you hit the accel. linkage you'll see a little pin come up. The screw stops the pin and thus, limits fuel. So adjust it as far up as you can as long as you can tolerate the black smoke. Most turbo'd 3208's can run fine with the screw all the way out(removed). And just behind that is the high rpm governor adjustment. It's labeled as 'high idle', but only go 2-3 turns at a time as to keep it under 3200 no load. Backing the screw out raises the rpm. One more adjustment is the pre-boost power. This is up in the front of the other 2 adjustments. It's round & has 3 bolts holding it & 6 holes in it. Take all 3 bolts out and you may have to smack it with something to break it loose(mosly from paint). Now tighten it like you're screwing it in tighter, that makes the power come in sooner. If you go 'til it stops, then you may see lots of smoke if you mash down on the pedal. Back it out as needed.
