Default Painting leather

I thought this might be of interest, although my project was not on the bus. We had a 23 year old couch that the leather finish was done. The seating area, the arms and the top of the back looked terrible. The seats had no colour left in much of the area you sit in. It was the grey colour of untreated, split leather, like cheap welding gloves.
Online I read that you wipe the leather with alcohal to remove oils, then lightly sand, I used a 3M scotchbrite pad you use when painting cars. Then paint with acrylic paint. The first coat you mix 50% with wated so it soaks into the leather. Then 2 or 3 light coats. I used a small sponge and applied the paint in a circular motion. Small pieces of dowel can hold the cushions apart while the paint dries in the seams.
I used acrylic exterior house paint, tinted to my colour, $30 at Home Depot.
The results were amazing. The couch looks new.
Thought this might be of interest if folks wanted to change the colour, or to improve the look of older drivers seats.

Also consider a spray dye for this type of project...read the FC Spring Fling thread for details. It’s held up really well on our dinette cushions.

Default Painting leather

I painted all of the leather in our 84, still holding up after 12 years.
The last pic was cleaning with acetone.
