Default Using emoticons ("smilies")

Does anyone know how to use emoticons in Chrome or Opera browsers? They work fine while using Firefox, but I prefer Opera because it loads so much faster in a Linux environment. But when I select a smiley using either Chrome or Opera, I get the ascii keystroke equivalent (colon, right bracket for default smiley, for example). I have "smileys enabled" in the settings. I was wondering, although it shows the ascii equivalent to me, does it actually transmit an emoticon?

Default Test message

I'm in Opera, just testing to see if smileys translate when post is sent...

Default smileys resolved

I find that although "smileys" don't display when I select them, they do once the post is submitted...
