Default Brand new 5th wheel wreck

I saw this on a military retired Facebook page the other day. This is an active duty family PCSing to a new base. Seems lots of them are living in RVs now.

They are all fine. It looks like operator error IMHO.

We were going north on I-75 south of Berea, KY a few years ago and traffic came to a halt. So we poked along at a snails pace for a few miles and came upon a pull behind, (no way of knowing if it was a 5th wheel or standard camper), that was scattered all over the median. The biggest piece of the thing was the toilet Even the fridge was in pieces I don't know what happened other than the "camper" looked like a bomb had hit it. Each time I see something like that I think about how safe I am in a Bird. I'm not naïve enough to think that I can't get hurt, so I am extremely careful, but the odds are on my side for sure.

I have seen the same thing. They disintegrate. Like you said, the biggest thing I saw was a suitcase one time.

Can you imagine hunkered down in that to ride out a hurricane or even parked in the driveway during one. Nothing is going to blow over a Bluebird.

In some states, I believe it is legal to ride in a 5th wheel trailer if you have an intercom system to the driver!!

My son lost his TT a few months back heading into AZ on a windy (50mph gust) day. He claims the trailer "flew" off the road. I know him, I'm sure that him going 80MPH had nothing to do with the lightweight trailer flying off the road.

Anyhow, we had similar gusts coming back just a few days ago. In the bird, it was a nice drive. Granted I go about 64MPH and the bus weighs 4 times what his trailer did, but we didn't even feel it pushing us around. I've had worse rides in my truck on days like that.

I hope they can recover most of their possessions and get through the insurance hoops and hurdles without loosing to much.

When I was looking for backup lights for my bus, I was having a hard time finding new. I found out that they used the same model on some Winnebagos, so I started looking at online RV junk yards. All it takes is about 30 seconds looking at these wrecked plastic class A boxes to be very pleased with your purchase, at least from a safety perspective.

You really have to wonder how anybody survives in one of those.
