Brenda's dad gave me 60 feet of 8/4 cable. I would like to make an extension cord out of this. How much voltage would it drop on that long of run? Since we have folks come over to our place, it would be used for them to plug in. I suspect they still would have to power manage using this cord.

Voltage drop on wire length is a function of current passing trough resistance so voltage drop changes as the current passing through the wire changes.
The standard resistance of a #8 copper wire is .000739 ohms per foot with a maximum current rating of 70 Amps according to the table I found. So multiplying the maximum rationg times the resistance/foot equals a voltage drop of .000739 X 70= .05173 volts X 60 feet = about 3 volts. Not enough to be of concern according to my figures.

Ernie...
From the table, 60 feet of #8 gauge drops .2v @ 5A, .6V @ 15A, and 1.2v @ 30A.

Thank you all. I'm going to get the ends and make up this cable. I appreciate it and my friends who stop by will too.
