Default battery charger

I know the topic of battery chargers has been talked about a lot, but here is my situation. My 87 PT 38 has 2 IOTA DLS 45 chargers. One appears to work, the other does not. They are available very inexpensive, and easily available. I really don't want to get into one of the larger more expensive charger/inverters, as my coach has a good inverter that works fine, and is already wired into the functions I want to use.

My question is, is the IOTA 45 a good charger for my use? Should I buy 2 new ones for the coach, or should I just replace one charger, and use the other until it fails?

Thanks,
Adam

Default battery charger

Adam,,,before you buy a new charger check to see if the high/low switch located in the compartment on the street side where your 50 amp power cord is stored is turned to the high position..On my 1991 wbwl the second charger will not work unless that switch is turned to high...Jim Barone, fulltiming in a 1991 wbwl currently in Savannah Ga.

Jim,

I have been told about this switch before, but I don't believe the 87 has this. I have never been able to find a high/low switch on this coach. I also think the 2 chargers have been changed over the years. Both chargers are just pluged into standard 110 volt house style outlets in the charger bay, and both outlets are hot.

Thanks,
Adam

Just a guess here, as I am not familiar with Iota chargers.

But is another electronic device needed for them to operate together, both at the same time ???
Should be able to just disconnect and measure the voltage charger output to verify if each is operational.

Don't know about Iota chargers either, but I think with progressive chargers, if you have two, you need what they call a charge wizard connected between them.

You need the portable IQ2 smart charger device...put it on only one of the chargers. The techs at Iota can help you or may the Iota on-line will help.

Also remember John Finn's post about the duplex outlet where the chargers plug into. Those duplex outlets are prone to burn-up...pull the cover and inspect for signs of charring or overheating. The hi-lo switch controls a 75 amp relay that allows the use of only one charger when the switch is in the 'low' position.

My hi-lo switch is in the outside small utility hook-up bay...where you hook up the water, electric shore power and cable tv. Your model my not have the switch.

Adam IOTAs need the IQ4 charge controller to work in pairs. I've been told by IOTA that without an IQ4 the chargers conflict and one usually fails.
