Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Identifying parts

Hi,
The very first thing I did when the coach was new to me was break the key off inside the lock of the rear louvered curbside cabinet door. Yesterday I jimmied it open and saw the view curbside for the first time.

There is a shiny new alternator sitting on the top of things and the belts are all fresh! A gigantic surprise and welcome sight.

Next to the alternator, curbside, is a smaller, not shiny device, like a small alternator (?) that has obvious shafts for a belt or 2 but nothing is connected to this smaller aparatus.

Could this be something for air conditioning? I haven't much of a guess...

As a side note: I thought I would find an air compressor in there so if you know where that actually is, please share?

Yes picture please,
but I'll guess that the alternator is new and the air conditioner compressor is disconnected. Check the new belts for tension, 6 or 7 or 8 belts

The second unit with no belts looks like an air conditioner compressor.
Like most Birds, it probably crapped out years ago and folks just use the gen and roof airs when traveling. Most of us do that now.

There is a Bluebird Body belt , that could be old or possibly original.
Hard to determine but the alternator looks smaller than original in this picture.

The roof airs are original and something, possibly a large tree, took at least the rear one out.
This bus was in the process of being renovated so lots of things are new: the toilet, the kitchen faucet, the water heater and water pump, this alternator... every day is Discovery Day!
I wish you experienced owners lived closer to Vermont! I'm so grateful for this forum.

Black gunk looks like oil. That domed apparatus on the right of the 'gunk' with a wire off the top appears to be an oil pressure sender. So the 'gunked' area might be a low oil pressure switch. My bus had a similar gunked area and it was the low oil switch leaking.

Before dark I got one more shot.
Going to hit these cabinets with the Shop Vac and hope the rust isn't The Secret that holds this baby together.
