Default J500 Retarder Electrical Question

My retarder wasn't retarding like it should. I have a few electrical issues, one of them being settings 2 and 3 seem to be shorted together. Need to diagnose where that fault lies, the other is it appears only half my coils are engaged.

So far I have figured out that there are 8 coils, each is 6 volts, and they are paired in series (or series-parallel). At least the ones that I have working now. Stage 3 for me was completely inoperative, so when I started this adventure, it was 20-40-40-60 amps draw. I found a few corroded/broken ring terminals to the coils, fixed those and now I have 20-60-60-80 current draw. An improvement, but I believe I should be running 40-80-120-160.

That being said, I believe it's the back half of the retarder not working. Here's my question: Where does it pass power from the front to the back? Is it through the studs at the junction blocks?

Do you have a model number off the unit? Offhand I'm thinking the amp draw should be 20-40-60-80 or 25-50-75-100. but I'll have to verify that. If that's the case, I'm wondering if #2 & #3 got wired in parallel? I'll get
to the manual & see what I find out.

It's a J-500, I wire brushed the plate near the grease fitting and verified that. The copy of the manual I found says 40-80-120-160 for the J-500. Makes me think that each coil draws 20a when energized, so max should be 160, since 8x20=160.

That's what I get for speaking offhand. But you seem to have some tie in between #2 & #3 I have not seen an internal diagram on the unit itself (only the 4 wires going to it. I may have a source monday.

I think I found what I've been looking for. Poking around on Telma's site, I found this. Setting aside the current draw spec, this looks closest to how my retarder is setup. I'm going to check the back of the unit with this diagram and see what has voltage and where, and I also have to address one more broken terminal, then dig into where my short is on the control side. This makes sense - I was seeing 6v at some terminals on the front side. That tells me it's completing a circuit with a partner coil.

Found another 2 terminals busted on the backside, fixed those, now I've got 20-60-60-100. I'm sure there's more to come. Need to look closer at the ones up top. The 5 broken ones I've fixed so far were on the bottom. Going for maximum on-demand deceleration for this thing!

Found and fixed one more, kicked stage 1 up to 40a. Up to 40-80-80-120 now. Feels like winning. The bad terminals are getting tougher to find now, gotta poke at them a bit and they'll break in a poof of corrosion. Having to voltage drop test them to ID the bad eggs.

Big load of heat shrink ring terminals inbound to me from the Amazonians. Ran through the last 3 I found at the local hardware store, and my stock. Tuesday is the delivery, and the saga continues!

My guess would be the problem is in #3. 1, 2 & 4 each add 40 amps of pull but position 3 adds none. Which connections seem to be most likely culprits?

Oh yeah that's an issue, but my bigger issue was that nearly half the coils were inop due to terminal corrosion. I can push on each relay to engage it individually and see how much current that individual circuit pulls. Right now I get 40, 20, 20, and 40. The way this works is that on position 1 it's just one hot leg, position 2 (supposed to be) 2 hot legs, position 3...and so on. It stacks the relays as you run it from 1-4. If I jumper a hot to relay terminal 2, it pulls in 1, 2, and 3. I just need to ohm out the switch at this point and understand if it's the switch, wiring, or the contactor box. Just basic automotive electrical diag.

After that, I'm going to order an inverse flux capacitor and install that inline on the hot leg off the battery, so if I engage it I can do 88 MPH.
