Default Backwards Muffler?

OK, so not such a silly question after all. It's a CAT so performance is everything, muffler stays for now. But beware Mr. Muffler/resonator of the straight pipe that Mike H. and others suggested, your days are numbered my friend.

Thanks to all for your kind and honest replies. Really?, I am glad I asked the question!

Default Magnaflow muffler

I just replaced the stock muffler with this Magnaflow # 12772 All stainless 4" in 4" out straight through muffler. I had thought of going 5" out but the path by the retarder is pretty tight.

Sounds nice, very little difference from original. Looks like I have picked up about 10 percent in manifold pressure. Now maybe I'll turn up the pump just a little.

The original muffler had offset in and out ports so I had to build a 4" offset to adapt to the tail pipe. I used a 4" 90 cut in half and sized to get the 4" offset I needed.

Quite a bit lighter than the old beast of a muffler, huh....

I just put 4 inch flex pipe in place of the muffler. Only loud when climbing hills, otherwise not much louder than original. The turbo seems to act as a muffler of sorts. On an N/A it might be much louder. I also picked up a pound or so in boost.

Pat, I did the same thing on my 3208NA only used a much shorter resonator. AND I installed it backwards to reduce the restrictions.

The only reason I put one on at all was to avoid a ticket for no muffler if inspected. However, I was surprised how little the noise increased. Best preformance increase I've done to date.

The Magnaflow is non directional just a straight through perforated core.
I ran it without the muffler or tail pipe on and it wasn't much louder but it was a harsher sound, the muffler mellowed it quite a bit.

I ended up with a 4" in/out straight through design with a 24" long body. Model was 7081HDT by IMCO

The IMCO I purchased you can see right through it. It did have small half moon baffles designed to catch the exhaust gas and dampen it, but if you install the muffler backwards these are smooth dimples that do not restrict at all.
