Default A story i remembered today

I was talking with Jim Walters and remembered this story.

Along about 1984 or so i was running the truck shop at the welding supply and it was in Feb,along about the time of speed week over in Daytona.
I was a stock car racer and fan at the time and the outside salesman was a huge NASCAR (now known as NAPCAR) fan,he was a transplant from NY.

So he and I were halfway planning on taking off and running over to Daytona to see the twins,2 races in one day.
But it was raining,do we drive over (2 hours) or not?
Ohh,one other guy was going with us,he worked in parts at the ford dealer.

So we are on the fence, should we drive or not?
Along about 10am the sky cleared up and we were off,a mad dash to Daytona.
Back then most of us local guys had a ponytail, yep,i had one.
The sales guys was older and clean cut.
The parts guy was my age and clean cut.
I was a diesel mechanic and a little rough.

We took a company station wagon, solid gray in color, with plain wheels and it looked like a cop car.
I also had a big German Sheppard dog that went everywhere i went.
The 3 of us and the dog were off.

The race is almost ready to start when we got to the speedway, the parking lot was full and we were driving around looking for a spot and we see the police car parking area.
All fenced in and gated and a FHP guarding the gate.
As we came along the road he opened the gate and showed us where to park.
He thought we were cops!
He told us he would check on the dog!

WE parked, thanked him and hurried in to the track.
After the race we came out,he stopped traffic on US92 and waved us out.
Perfect!
That was a great day,a good time and a good story!

After the r

Good stuff

Our Chief's Tahoe looks just like the Louisiana State Police units . We've blown through a many a speed trap on I-49 with a friendly wave .
