X2 on the Diesel Liberty! I love mine and it has a great tow rating. Its pretty good off road and the mpg is in the low to mid 20s. Mine is a little bit of a beater so I don't mind taking it off on some overgrown trails. They are a little hard to find but worth the effort if you ask me. Plus you gotta love that manual transfer case with part time high, full time hi, neutral and low.

We have an 06 Liberty, 3.7 gas. Love the Jeep but the mpg is not that great, the diesels are better, but cost more used. They only made the diesel in 06 (there is a story there but it is political). You can buy lots of the 06 era Jeep Liberties (40K miles) on EBay, dealer is Texas for about 14K, the diesels cost 3-4K more.
Jeep Liberty is heavy 4200 lbs, which depending on the state will require a braking system (not required in BC).
The Sion is a good vehicle, good milage, 4 down with a standard. Also a KIA Soul is towable 4 down in a standard. The KIA is abour 2300 lbs, These are two vehicles that we have considered to replace the Jeep eventually, mostly based on MPG. The Jeep is a tough vehicle, if you want to 4x4 the jeep Liberty is a good toad, just a little hard on fuel.

We have some friends that had a HHR. Got rid of it because it wouldn't tow straight. Had to replace the front tires twice.
Got an CRV and have had no problems.
We tow a 05 Honda Element.
Got it new, took it to a junk yard and gave him the back seats.
Built a box in the rear to handle stuff and it left me plenty of room behind the front seats to carry stuff.
05 is the last year that Honda warranties the tranny if it has a problem.
After that, if any tow stuff is on it, they won't fix any tranny problems.
We just run it thru the gears going from park to drive 1, drive 2 then to neutral.
Haven't had any problems at all with it.
72k on the speedo and about 10 towing.
We will keep it till it falls apart.
Only problem for us is the seats. We put gel cushions on seats and are good to go.

Over the years we have towed a whole bunch. Early Civic, Toyota wagon, Nissan PU, Tacoma 4 by4 and now a full size Silverado. The best vehicle was the Tacoma but it was an Auto so needed a driveshaft disconnect. The Silverados (4by4) are ready to tow with no gadgets needed. Nice comfy vehicle for a larger person. Last time I looked Randy is too large for an HHR!!!

Question is,what do we get?

We want something that does not require any fancy pumps, special driveshafts etc.
So,that leaves Jeeps,Saturns and some chevys and i have no idea what else.

We thought we wanted a jeep, but DANG!
Jeeps are not cheap!

Then we thought maybe an HHR chevy, they are flat towable but they have only been around for a few years,so they are not all that cheap but I can buy a newer one for less money than a jeep.

Saturn cars are out of the question, but the Saturn Vue may not be so bad, even though it looks a little girly!.

So,what to do?
What do you guys tow?
Do you like it?
Would you buy it again?
Randy, I TOW A SATURN VUE.........YOUR"girlie" friend Mike in Ohio

Randy I have had no problems towing the Vue, just make sure it has the Honda 5 speed transmission. The Vue Redline which I believe is all wheel drive IS NOT towable 4 down

Our toad is an 02 Acura MDX with auto wheel drive. We can tow flat at 70 mph and don't know it is back there. Specs call for a 3 minute warmup in neutral after running through all the gears. Book says repeat after 8 hours. If we are running a long day, I usually repeat after about 4 hours when we stop for lunch.
