Default fan clutch air leak

I have a 1991 sp36 and I heard an air leak from behind the radiator. So I pulled the bumper and swung the rad and pulled the fan blade and found air leaking out of a little hole in the front of the fan pulley. From searching this site I believe it must be a Horton fan. Does any one have a model # for the fan or a part # for a rebuild kit. Has anyone attempted to do a rebuild of the fan clutch assembly them selves in house? Any info would be helpful. Thank you

Hi Bill,

Yep it is a weep hole just like a water pump. air is leaking past a cartridge.
There is a seal Kit and a full seal / bearing kit available , I do not have the Horton part numbers available , but these parts are easily available many times on ebay, No special tools are needed, just take it apart and follow the install directions. Search this forum for Horton fan clutch, there are also pictures posted.

Thank you for the reply gentleman. I have already watched the videos. It does not look to difficult to do. Is there anything else I should be concerned with besides replacing belts while I am in there?

Follow John Finn's instructions on tensioning the belts, especially the Horton fan pulley adjustment,
There is a large O ring inside the Horton fan clutch, use the lube and very gently reassemble , it is really easy to damage or cut this O ring.
Gates Green stripe & especially Gates fleet runner belts are recommended, also available at NAPA.

the po left a complete set of 5 new cat belts, Should I shelve them and put on the gates or install the cat belts? Any idea which belts are better?

Default Horton

The Horton part number is 4205 for just the seal kit without bearings. Bill is absolutely right when he says to be careful reassembling the clutch because the large "O" ring is easily damaged. We know this for certain. Found out the hard way. The instructions are comprehensive, but you will need to identify the parts visually as the diagrams assume some knowledge. Read them several times and be familiar with the parts and you will have no problem. It is really easy, just very heavy. Don't forget to disconnect the air line before removing the bolts on the clutch. When reinstalling the clutch, take note of the two plates that the bolts go through. The holes are NOT centered! Narrow side to the center. I will repeat this only because it is important. When Bill says to follow John Finn's on tightening the Horton fan clutch belts, you must do it just that way if you expect them to stay on. Read John's instructions carefully and follow them exactly, and you will have no problems there either. I don't want to sound like these procedures are difficult because they are not, but the steps to take in the proper order are important to do the job correctly. Bill is the man when it comes to Horton clutch rebuilds! He guided me through my first one and made it easy (even though I cut the large "O" ring). Good luck!

Default Horton

That is the correct number per an older post from Dick Gideon. His numbers are always correct!
