Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out. |

IF you are talking about a landoll or flat bed to haul the bird, budget 6$/$7.00 per mile.

Your looking at over 10,000$ to move that bird from Ca to Wi. You might be able to find someone needing a "backhaul" to do it on the cheap. Say around 7500 then you will be looking at the labor, parts, and fluids for the change over.

Trying to be blunt and an honest opinion, this is not a good idea.
the BB has sat for 5 years all systems need repaired, tires batteries, chargers, etc, then an unknown used donor engine. I would ask myself, "if the used engine was already installed, how much would one pay for this old used resting Bird". There are Birds for sale at a better price and in good condition, keep looking. Just trying to help. Old BB owners do not like new folks to get hurt.

What did it take to do that ? What would it take to do that to a 87fc-35 and how much would you put the cost at ?

Mike has a double overdrive tranny and a 300 plus horse 3208 cat. He has also changed the ring gear and pinion. No need to try and catch him.

My coach is geared for 106 @ 2800 in 6th .65 od.
87/89/sp w/ZF are geared @ 82 in 5th that's .8 I believe. That being said the FC drive shaft is too long and complex to safely exceed 80 by much, been 90 a time or two but the drive shaft thrum gets right scary. 75 is a good cruising speed, and it's the speed limit on much of my WI to ID commute that takes 3 days. Doing a few more calcs: the sealed bearings we used to repair my Thelma type retarder have a speed limit of 3500, have to hit 135 in 6th to over speed them. Probably not an issue but shaft balance and angles are critical.
