Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Finn's Inn Express gets an engine upgrade

Mike Hohnstein has a extremely low hours Caterpillar 3208t that Mike pulled out of a day cab in town delivery Ford semi tractor that he purchased when the tucking company went bankrupt, the company had just performed a complete rebuild of the engine and drivetrain a couple of months prior to the bankruptcy sale. It is a Caterpillar Remanufactured 3208T not an aftermarket rebuild.

I already plans set up until next spring so we will be installing it in my 'Bird next April at his shop in Germantown, Wisc, he is currently changing all of what is needed to convert this from a standard transmission over the Allison transmission along with whatever else needs to be switched over from a NA engine like mine, he already has a engine similar to my NA that he can use to change parts from, we will do this swap starting the week after the Myrtle Beach rally.

I'm doing this mainly because he gave me a great deal on both the engine and the labor, it currently is set up as a 215 hp, but that will change both the horsepower and the rpm will be adjusted to be the same as what comes in Wanderlodge's of the 80's.

As you all know Mike is very good at getting performance out of a 3208, but it will be somewhat conservative in comparison to what he has done in the past )

This being a Turbocharged motor compared to my Naturally Aspirated engine I have now will make a difference when climbing grades, I'm not looking to go faster just hold the speed on the hills especially at higher elevations.

The persistent oil leak in my current engine was also a determining factor in this upgrade, it is only getting worse and if it were to break down when I'm on the road, I'm sure I would end up paying a lot more to get it all done.

On my current NA engine we installed new motor mounts, but I want to change those when the turbo Cat goes in, but I haven't been able to find the same mounts we used before as seen in the picture, as was suggested in an earlier WOG thread I also checked with the local Sterling dealer (old Ford) for Cat 3208 motor mounts in a Ford L8000 and they were completely different, so any help I can get with Cat 3208 motor mounts for an early 80's FC part numbers and /or a source will help me right now. I'm getting an early start on acquiring parts. Tomorrow I will be checking on exhaust parts for the Cat 3208T as the current exhaust from the turbo to the muffler will not work and we will also be modifying that somewhat.

Stay tuned I will be adding to this thread whenever I have new information.

Sounds like a neat project John. How hard is it to get the motor out?

We had a 3208 in the '97 Triple E Empress we had before the LXI. It was programmed for 275 HP and 865 ft lbs. It was an awesome engine and we got 12 mpg with that coach, and it pushed up hills great with a 25,000 lb coach.

John
I'm sure you'll enjoy the new hp-& torque.
Problem as I see it is you'll only be able to smell the flowers AFTER you go by and you'll not see them grow for sure. Gonna need to change your signature line

When you have more performance you may find your normal routine may need adjusting.

When you are ready for that nap, the Walmart will be behind you instead of just ahead.

John, that motor mount looks like the front engine mounts on my Cat powered 1976 Kenworth. I have not tried sourcing new mounts yet but when I do I will get you some dimensions and part numbers

John,
You mean you are not going for a 6 speed Allison as well? I'm sure Mike is tired of that one he has and is likely planning another upgrade, so make him an offer

Nice upgrade. Don't forget to add the two gauges(boost and egt) with it. They are very necessary. Don't ask how I know
