Default 87(and Up?) Cruise Control troubleshooting plus Location of components

I am getting ready to go on a short trip to central texas. I am in need of some help from the great minds. I have searched the forum. and read a bunch on the Bendix system.

I haven't been able to locate anything that says WHERE the Bendix cruise control module (or other components?) is located on the 87 FC. anyone have that info so I don't start opening things pointlessly?

So, my cruise control works perfectly. high idle works great. zero problems. AND THEN: as far as I can tell after the bus gets warm, or used for a while, or going up a slight grade that could easily be handled without downshifting.

the system will cut out, and cannot be reset, turning off the switches and set/resume have no effect after this point. (when this happens the high idle doesn't work either) the only "fix" is time. if the bus sits for a few hours it may work again for a brief period. and if the bus is left over night, it will work as the first time.

I am thinking it is the CA-1 control unit, or possibly voltage, maybe the heat is causing higher impedance in a wire. or a solenoid is failing to regulate at higher temps.

after it fails. it doesn't "try" any longer. so it leads me to thing electronic, vs mechanical failure.

I have a Williams air throttle, and stock WL cruise switches, thats all I know so far.

It wasn't raining by any chance, was it? My cruise once cut out because it was raining and the front vent was open. I think it was because of moisture, at least. Its never done it again. Vents closed = no problem.

No rain effects, seems the hotter it is ambient, the narrower the operational window. I'm hoping to fix today, driving with it is so much more enjoyable. in the 6k or so miles on the bird since January, less than I'd like were cruise enabled.

maybe a hint as to location though. I've seen conflicting info about it being behind the dash, under the dash, and under the coach streetside. I guess it could be in the side console area as well by the trans shifter, but I doubt there are air lines run there.

I believe everything is under the dash and behind the grill. 16 hex head bolts then the screws on the panel, but I've never had to mess with my cruise so don't hold me to that.

Dennis,
It is located street side, behind the battery tray,
rectangular metal box. access from under the bus near the Bendix air cylinder and drag link. It can be fixed, a tinkers dream or nightmare, lots of parts, manual and drawings in the files.

It will be fixed. Thanks for saving me more hunting. It’s back above 100 degrees here. Every minute counts.

I emailed 3G re: CA-1 repair earlier today, awaiting a response from him as well. I’m going to check what I can basically this afternoon in the shade.

Here’s hoping it’s simply low voltage!!
