Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Do you get WOT when not under load (not in gear)?
I do seem to get good throttle response when not in gear.

I don't think they put Facet pumps on in 1980, so assuming if there is one it was added at some point by a previous owner. I will definitely investigate.

Sounds like restricted fuel filters. All diesel 3208's need a electric pump some where between the injection pump and the fuel tank. Doesn't really matter where it is located, back by the tank is best but any where is better than nothing.
Makes it much easier to change out filters and reduces load on the injection pump lift pump.
In regard to a miss, injectors are rarely a culprit, more likely a failed adapter in the cylinder head, injection line connects to it @ the valve cover, injection nozzle connects under the valve cover.

Go with Mike's flow chart, not mine. I can only go by my experience and when my coach stopped making horsepower it was time to overhaul the injector pump, yours could be a collapsed fuel line for all I know

Thanks Mike.

Any specific pump you would recommend? I am pretty sure it does not currently have one, so I will be prepared if I need to install one.

Thanks again.

All the symptoms you’ve described I experienced when my “facet” lift pump got a clogged strainer screen. The pump is located above the rear axle on my fc- rear bath. The pump on my bus is a carter.

My 1982 also did not have a pusher pump. I added a carter pump and it made a huge difference. It was occasionally stalling out and always when coasting to a stop.

Could be sucking air in through the line going to the racor gauge.
