Default Transmission hunt

My MTB654CR transmission with the retarder on the back is old and grey like me.

The case is corroded more than any aluminum item I have ever seen I think. Many of the bolt holes in the case have corroded to the point where the threads strip out and even some of the lumps (technical term) on the case where bolt holes were drilled and tapped have popped off so the threaded portion of the bolt is lying there in half a hole

You'll love the pictures.

Problem is, it works great but has developed enough leaks that it is indeed time to do the job. I think when I use the retarder it must really throw the oil because if I don't the fluid does not go away nearly as fast. Hard to see though since I am way up front at the time. But, I have lots of absorbent pads I put down every evening these days.

Jim Army 6x6 LLC has a Army Rebuilt one for $3650 and he may have a core for me but I'd rather give my money to another WOG member. Also I'd need to get the retarder removed from my old trany and put on the new one.

Anyone have the goods?

NY for $1750 obo, but not rebuilt, no info on mileage but 90 day warranty. I'd imagine shipping is going to kill you getting it up there, no?

Thanks for the replies folks. I saw that other one on the eBay and will be heating up the cellphone batteries in the morning. I have a list of salvage dealers and trans suppliers who will hear from me.

Luckily we are in Corpus Christi so shipping should be less $$$ than the transmission down here. At home, not so much. We leave the bus in these 48 states nowadays. After many trips up and down the Alcan over the decades we decided to stop burning that 800 gallons of fuel to get home and back.

We did talk to s guy in AZ with a gas RV who only gets just under 5 mpg so we feel positively miserly these days!

Thank you Randy. I knew you'd be looking around the yard and warehouse.

I have a good long list of places to look and still have hope. I thought about maybe a large diaper but refilling through that six foot tube is such a pain.....

Years ago I took over maintenance on some Amsco steam sterilizers in a hospital in Virginia. Within days of taking over the contract for all the equipment in the place I was called to the operating rooms when red oil began to leak into the hallway from the Central Supply area. I arrived to find a washer-sterilizer with much hydraulic plumbing and many leaks. It turned out the Amsco people had been piling rags under it to catch all the oil and when they lost the contract they left a 2 inch pile of rags, took the service manuals and were gone.

I spent many hours chasing leaks but I did have my own fresh pile always there.

I was thinking that if it had started leaking sooner it might have rust proofed it'self.!
My Hyd fan motor did a great job of rust proofing my toad last year!

I've got feelers out to my diesel mechanic buddy in VA, I'll let you know if he finds anything.

Well, the back of the bus will never rust and I have done my part to keep the dust down behind me, but that small filler tube is a real pain when you're dumping quarts of trany fluid. I might see if the mechanic can get the tube loose and re-route it to the side somehow so the tube is under 6 feet long.

I have one available from Jim Army 6x6 LLC in MN and he is giving me a good price. He and the guys at Allison TransTech here in Corpus will talk tomorrow and get the SN and part number so they can make sure the trans will work with the retarder and that they can get the seals and such from Allison before they will commit but it looks promising. They have 2-stroke mechanics too but luckily the engine is sweet.

Allison shuts down for the holidays so anyone needing anything has this week. These guys won't be doing mine til January.

So far it looks like TransTech will be easy to work with. I will let the group know how it turns out.

Happy motoring out there.
