Default DDEC IV PID Intake Manifold Temperature

Folks,

My VMSpc diagnostics shows the following code:

ABS PID 105 7 Intake Manifold Temperature Not Responding 11/13/10 16:59

My VMSpc has never been able to display a correct value for the Intake Manifold Temperature; it usually displays 0x00 and on occasion 0xFF. I think I may have a loose or corroded connection. The intake manifold temperature sensor is new. I have a couple of questions:

1) Does DDEC IV do anything useful with the output of this sensor?
2) Can any one share the ECM connector and pin number for this sensor?

The acronym PID might stand for Proportional-Integral-Derivative, a type of control algorithm. If that is true, then I would guess it is using the valve to control something, ABS?

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your help, but...

the PID, SID, and FMI parameters are well know DDEC diagnostic codes which stand for:
Parameter Identification Character,
Subsystem Identification Character, and
Failure Mode Identifier.

PID 105 indicates: Intake Manifold Temperature.

In any case I learned that the Intake Manifold Temperature is wire number 132, in cavity N-2, and is color coded White. Wire number 452 is common.

From the "Detroit Diesel Series 60 Application and Installation Manual":

"The cooling capability of the air-to-air system must be sufficient to reduce the turbocharger compressor out air temperature to within 45 F (25 C) of ambient temperature on all Series 50, and all Series 60 engines. Air inlet manifold temperature requirements are available in PEN. Typically the maximum intake manifold temperature is 151 F (66 C)."

The compressed air leaving the turbocharger can be as hot as 300 F.

Your welcome to look over some of my erroneous readings and compare. I not sure I understand all of it that's for sure. let me know what you see through your eyes that may be a concern. Kinda like a crystal ball Honestly I don't know?? dont see any FMI parameters which could be a good thing.

Hi Slim,

I had the following conversation with the folks at Silverleaf. Their reply is way at the bottom. In short, there's a lot of noise on the line. There is error protection for each message but it's weak. Furthermore, diagnostic messages are logged as received. This means that most of what's in the diagnostic log is spurious.

The Messages do have a CRC, but it is quite weak with J1708/J1587, so Bogus messages can be received and Logged. This can be the result of Noise on the Data Bus at the Physical Link Layer, or from a Device Transmitting out of Turn, by not delaying long enough after the previous message has been sent. Most Data Points are sent frequently enought that you won't usually notice any Bogus data, but the Diagnostic Messages are Logged as received.

Look for Loose connectors for the Data Bus, which can cause Intermittent Connection, or Moisture in the Connectors.

Hey David,

I actually forgot about this topic thanks for the update, sounds logical. I see I have mostly transmission PID and SID's and a few engine codes. I see where you have a bunch of ABS, and a few TRN and no engine codes.

I realize you copied only the events logged on 11/29/10 whereas I copied 08-09 data. But if you look at the events on mine from 02/25/10-02/26/09 you can see mostly TRN. Maybe I need to look at my harness at the connector where it plugs in.
