Default Onan RVQ 5500 no compression.

Some background first. This generator is 3 years old and has given me yeoman service whenever called on. It ran 4-12 hours/day from June-August in the So. Cal. desert running 2 14K A/C units, .

It was running about 4 hours a week ago and suddenly just quit. When it died the wife said she heard a metal sound. But she can hear a car door close a mile away, I heard no metal sound.

All the obvious checks made, oil, gas, spark, gas solenoid, fuel pump/filter OK. The last major maintenance I performed was adjusting valve lash about a year ago, set all to .004 per manual. I decided to check compression, nothing, zip. I got under the rig, put a wrench on the cam shaft nut and could turn it with one finger, valves are not moving.

I'm thinking the cam shaft or crank gears broke, that would account for the "metal sound" she who must be obeyed heard.

I'm not an infernal combustion engine guy so I'm looking for any comments. Could it be anything else, am I missing something? Whatever it ends up being it's going to the shop, my expertise ends with changing spark plugs and setting valves.

Oh yea, I change oil/filter every 150 hours with Castrol HD 30W and it has 3400+- hours.

I appreciate any comments and thanks for your time.

Paul

Yes, it's gas, carburetor not fuel injected. I don't think 3400 is a lot of hours for a quality generator. I've got 2 Honda 3000 that have that much time on them and they run like new. Having said that, I'm going to check in to the repair cost, read labor here, and if it's too high, I'll but a new one and keep this for parts. I wish Honda made an exact replacement for this Onan RV generator.

Thanks for your reply.

Sounds like the cam shaft snapped. If so the valves remained where ever they were and most likely the pistons smashed into the open ones. Don't know if it has a timing chain, but that could also be the culprit. Anyway, it's going to need an experienced mechanic to determine the reparability.

By the way, they have a 3 year warranty on the engine I believe!

so,is that a twin or single cylinder?
I have no idea about average hours on a gas genny.
We don't have too many gas gennys on Wanderlodges,so its not our strong point.
Did you ask Onan?

Check out the Smokstack Forum they have a sub forum for Onan generators, I've visited their site a few times. They were helpful.

I have one of those GAS ONANs, and have been fixing it for some time now, "smokestack" has been very good to me! I now have had it running on the road to use the A/C, then it stopped again and a lot of oil ran on to the ground? I will get it going soon! Try the ONAN people.
