Default alternator

Can you put a 210 amp alternator in a 89 SP that has a 160 amp now and will the wiring be heavy enough for it. I just wanted to replace mine and I saw a good buy on one. It is a J mount & I think it will fit or what do you think would be the biggest one you should use? It is suppose to be for a truck on bus. I am also going to up grade my inverter as it quit working this winter after we got to FL any good advice on that? Thanks Don

It would be wise to size the wire(s) between the alternator and coach system/batteries based on the 210 amp rating with an appropriate fuse. Since a 160 amp unit was fine for the coach it is unlikely you will exceed that or even come very close to it under normal circumstances. The alternator voltage regulator will control the current based on the load (batteries, coach load, inverter, etc).
However, if a component fails and draws excess current you could reach the max on the alternator and properly sized wires and a properly sized fuse would save your bacon.

Thanks for the advice Gardner. That might be a lot of work & not needed. I think I saw some where one time a 180 amp would work with not much trouble. I will still need to replace the boat anchor of an inverter because it isn't working. I checked the fuses & they are good. Thanks Don
