I found this gauge in my shop, I do not know anything about it. It is -200 to + 200 amps. On the face is Transportation Safety Devices, INC. Indanapoles, Ind. On the back is a sticker "4840 -5. I would like to use it if someone can help me connect it right. Do I need a shunt??
(I have had 2-amp gauges on the bus both do not work, one was wire between the GEN & Bus battery, other was to a shunt ?).

SO: John I got A shunt for the gauge 50MV @ 200 amps. I also found some paperwork for an amp (do not know what one), but shows hook-up with 10 AWG in line (no shunt). So to be safe how should I test it? You can E-mail me @ donelec@sti.net. I have not used Amp gauges (Only clamp on) and do not want to blow another one. Thank you!!!

Your ammeter is most likely just a sensitive DC voltmeter that measures the small voltage drop across the shunt. I suspect it should be wired like the attached picture shows. If you run new meter wires, you may want to twist the small wires going to the ammeter to shield them from electrical noise and probably add some low amperage fuses at the shunt to protect them in case one ever shorts to ground. Too tired to draw the picture after a 16 hour drive from Maryland to Florida so I borrowed it from here: ![]() http://forums.aths.org/PrintTopic147941.aspx
