Since I'm new to having a Jake Brake I just wonder if all of you guys that are having this issue had your transmission reprogramed for 5th gear. Coming back home on my maiden voyage in my new to me bus, the jake would come on, go to 4th, and then if I accelerated it would go back up to 6 or even the Mode selection without issue. I was thinking of having it reprogrammed, but will wait to see what you guys find out.

Hi Jim,

It is very common to have the transmission reprogrammed to downshift to 5th instead of 4th. It really all depends on driver preference. Some have reprogrammed the transmission to not downshift upon activating the Jake Brake which means it would stay in 6th and just add the engine braking. Mine was originally programmed to downshift to 4th which if found to be a bit excessive for me and my driving. I had mine reprogrammed to downshift to 5th and I am more satisfied with the drivability for my driving habits. It will cost you around $300 - $450 to get it reprogrammed. Ask around, many have elected to keep theirs downshifting to 4th. However, if you elect to stay with downshifting to 4th, be sure to watch your engine RPM to not over speed your engine. Some say that you cannot overspeed the engine with the Jake but with mine, it did seem to get uncomfortably high on the RPM in some situations.
God luck on whatever you decide.

Thanks Randy, I was aware of all of that information, having read about it here on WOG. I was just saying I was new to driving a coach with a Jake and was wondering if all of you that are having the issue in your first post had their transmissions reprogrammed and if that possibly was causing the issue of now upshifting. Because min does upshift but it has not been reprogrammed.

My biggest beef, when stock was running with the cruise on. The jake and cruise would fight each other. I learned to turn the jake off when using the cruise. Reprogramming of downshift shifting from 4th to 5th was great.

Rewiring the jake switch on the dash to activate the jake with the break pedal was an even better mod!
