Ever read Bill Bryson's "A walk in the woods"? Bryson's a pretty amusing non-fiction, mainly travel, writer, writes books about his various adventures. He did the same thing, with a friend, when they were both "past their prime". He has a rather quirky, engaging prose style, that make his books very readable. They made a movie based on the book, starring Robert Redford & Nick Nolte. Wasn't too bad, but IMO the book was far better.

Since I’ve been hiking I have lost about 30 pounds and can’t really afford to lose much more. Lol.
You won't miss that 30 lbs when you get to Mount Washington. David your a brave man, especially if this is your first major hike, my hats off to you. Back in '82 I was at a power plant in MO working seven 12 hour days and making a killing. My friend and work cohort says one day at the Tap Room after work lets quit and go hike the AT. Neither one of us were in any kind of physical shape to do that nor had we done any serious hikes for years, all we did was work and drink beer. To top it off he wants to bring the cosmo girl he was dating who thinks hiking the AT is skipping through a field of daisies with spotted deer and butterflies and puffy white clouds in the blue sky. No way says I! I have a better idea, lets go down to the Honda shop and buy a couple of full dress Goldwings and ride around the country drinking more beer. So, to make a long story short, that's exactly what we did and it was a great trip. 12k miles later we were back in TN with lots of stories to tell. Good luck and enjoy the walk!

I crossed the Appalachian Trail several times over the years and really did not think it was all that strenuous. I crossed it in North Georgia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Maryland, New York, Maine all from the comforts of the vehicle I was driving at the time. On the other hand Fran & I hiked about 10 miles in Canada once and to me that 10 miles seemed like 2000. Proud for you David, be careful & take care of those feet, and keep a close eye out each morning & night for ticks. Bears will usually runnoft but ticks are unmerciful.
