Default Bought a 1983 FC

Hello everyone, I bought a 1983 FC in Bandera Texas. I live in New York and will be traveling soon to inspect it. According to the seller the FC belonged to her father who passed away many years ago. Her husband drove the FC 12 hours to there home and pretty much sat there for the next 10 years. She did say her husband used to start it and move it a little every month until about 4 years ago. I’m sure it needs tires, oil change, filters etc. I know nothing about diesel vehicles or Bluebird Wanderlodges. Would anyone know someone in the Bandera Texas area that can help me with the inspection and to advise what I need to get it road ready. If all goes well I will be driving the FC to my brother’s home in Arizona.

Looking forward to this adventure.
Ralph

Wow, adventure indeed!

Did you buy this sight unseen? Do you have a walk-away refund option?

Has it been stored inside or in the shade? Check carefully for water/ critter damage.

Hope you can turn a wrench and have some skills or a high balance credit card.

Do you have a budget for all the rubber (tires, hoses, belts, air bags) batteries, filters, ect.?

Get roadside assistance for towing... Coach-Net preferred by many here.

Before you go far, get it to a reputable old school diesel/chassis shop for a safety inspection. Don't go working under the bus unless properly supported. (Leveling jacks don't qualify). Getting hot down there braking down takes the fun away real fast.

Keep us posted we're here to help! Lots of institutional knowledge and experience here!

Happy trails!

Hi NH Bill, I believe it has been stored in the shade. I'm not handy with tools at all. Would you happen to have a ballpark figure on all the rubber, batteries filters etc.?

Hi Gene, I was wondering about a name. Yours is on the top of the list.

Differential, transmission, engine oil and coolant, belts, hoses, batteries, cables, injector pump leaking? Generator oil and coolant, possible water pump belt tensioner: $10k with relatively cheap tires

Yep that's in the ball park if your not doing the work yourself.

If you need shocks add another $1,000-$1,500, brakes $1,200- $1,500, wheel bearings?

Throttle cable?

Electrical: Directionals, brake lights, head lights.

These are some of the basics to put it on the road. All the house systems are another layer. ACs? Cruise-Airs or rooftops? Water systems, propane system?

If you have history, logs and records it will help a lot.

Need to establish a baseline to know what you've got. Then you can start getting an idea of what it going to cost to get it where it needs to be and where you would like it to be.

You really don't know what was working when it was parked let alone what has deteriorated over time I don't know whether to wish you good luck or to tell you to reconsider. Even after owning one for 10 years I wouldn't do this unless I had a very knowledgeable buddy riding shotgun with me. Hope it works out but be careful
