I used a crows foot on a medium extension and a ratchet handle to get the thing loose. I was standing where the batteries and muffler belong - as you could see in an earlier post, I removed those along with the brackets that hold them in order to pretty everything up. I will just muck through putting it all back together comforted by the idea that if I do it well and am lucky about no component failure, I won't have to do it again for ten or so years.

The Racor filter was filthy inside, I am going to clean it and replace the broken turbine. I know it probably does not matter, but they are available and I got one. I have the master gasket kit. The bowl is old-style which has the contact/probes through the side for the heater and water sensor. I need to remove these to get the ring off to be cleaned and painted. I figure the old o-rings may not give a good seal when I try to put it back together and they are not included in the master seal kit. I got 4 probe sets on Ebay, though I am going to try to take an old o-ring off and get replacement o-rings. Then I will keep the probe kits for future use or barter - the old style bowl kits are probably on a lot of our birds.

Pictures - Air compressor access from which I removed the hoses -

The new and old air compressor coolant hoses - the new fuel hoses to/from the Racor - all the new toys (so far) for this project along with the Racor bin. The broken Racor turbine, the bowl with suspect leaky probes.

Ahh,ok,seeing your pics refreshed my memory.
It was the front hose that i made a wrench to fit,and i did saw the lip off the bottom of the bodywork so i could get my big hands in there.
My wrench was a big C with square bends,it was wide enough thatthe handle end was on the backside of the compressor,it was a quick and dirty build, not pretty at all and crude too,but it worked.

The grandson and I installed new Koni 2497SP1 on the bus today, we set them at firm. I hope we have a better ride. The old shocks were loose as can be.

Hi John,
How many miles were on the ones you had removed?

Replaced three short hoses in the water bay. The hoses were yellowed, dirty and had a leak or two. Re-positioned the water pump a little too.

The output hose has a tee – one hose goes to a 2 gallon tank accumulator and the other goes to a smaller Jabsco 1 liter accumulator tank. The pressure in the 2 gallon tank was 24 psi and zero pressure in the Jabsco. I’m guessing the 2 gal tank was added at some point and the Jabsco is inop. Should I try to put air in the Jabsco? Plumbing was working fine before I winterized, have not put water back in yet.

One other question on the filter in the last picture. When I removed the filter it was loose inside the housing - I don't think it was the correct filter. Any idea on the correct filter?

Not sure but the bus has 130K on it. When I replaced the ones on my old FC the shocks had never been changed. It only had 100K on it when I changed them out. I think they're like tires they'll age out.

Today I got Songbird ready to head north and hopefully make it to Hood River Oregon
by next Wednesday. It is only 1200 miles but leaving our Lake Havasu Arizona paridise ( to us) is tuff! We are lucky to be caravaning with some great Wanderlodge friends to Susanville California before they turn west to Family in Northern California.
Mark Henderson and Eileen Allen will lead us north tomorrow. It was 100 degrees here today so we are leaving early to beat the heat. Traffic thru Las Vegas will be weird! The whole trip will be weird in this " new world" we are in presently living in.. I wonder how much diesel I can buy at negative prices on the way ! Maybe we will fuel at Fallon Nevada and they will pay us!
Rather than doing our origional plan of taking Songbird back and me flying back to bring our "shuttle" pickup and camper later my amazing wife will follow me home
We just don't know what to expect flying and being shuttled back to Havasu with all that is going on. We need to get back to Oregon and start planning for our.......
"Hood River Rally" in July! REMEMBER,, THERE IS NO SALES TAX IN OREGON!!
Oh by the way, Curt Springer, your smoker is safely tucked into our shop and ready for "Q" in 2021! Ray and Leslie , I hope we are registered for the feast! See you in Hood River or "Q"!

I'm trying to find someplace to stay on the Oregon coast in July. So far, no one is taking reservations yet. If I do manage to get up there, I'll see if I can get a couple of days to head to the rally. Is there someplace I can register yet?

Default Engine bay cleanup (continued)

Worked on cleaning the engine bay some more. Seems like it is kind of like driving across Texas - takes a while. I started by trying to remove the oil line that goes to the manifold and two sensors mounted to the frame rail. No luck. Tried heat and gentle tapping on the wrench with a small ball peen hammer. I am afraid of breaking the fixture that feeds the two hoses off in the block, so I backed off. I want to move the starter solenoid relay and the oil manifold/sensors out from under the frame, and so wanted to be able to put a longer hose on, but maybe I can find a spot that is serviceable and the hose will reach.
After messing with the hose a little while, I set to needle gunning the exposed frame members and then wire brushing them. I applied ospho (a rust converter) and let it dry. Then spritzed the metal with self etching primer and let that dry. While it was drying I decided to tackle the metal plate that the Bendix cruise control is mounted to. I removed the components without disconnecting anything and proceeded to wire brush the plate in sections - moving the cruise guts as I needed for access. Once the plate was down to bare metal, more self etching primer and then after drying I brushed on grey marine paint and sprayed the frame parts with the first coats of black (except where the cruise parts are). More tomorrow.

It is a lot of work, I'm doing the same thing on my bus. I feel like I have been moving backwards for a long time, I will be glad to start moving forward.
Thumbs up on the osho, I use it on a lot of projects.
