If unable to source the exact original, perhaps Homey Lowe's would have something similar you could cut to size. You might even find an alternate diffuser you like better.

I bet you've got it "standing tall." I noticed you happened to glaze over that alligator comment.

Not really a "today" story, but the last few weeks. I got the bus work wrapped up (I still need to post to that project thread) and we packed up, hooked up the Cherokee and headed for our private camp spot up in Avery, Ca. About 30 miles down the road, I noticed the bus was not pulling quite as spriteley as before so I scanned the guages - all looked okay. Then I glanced down at the rearview and saw billowing clouds of smoke! This triggered immediate dread as I had done a fair bit of work involving the cooling (actually coach engine coolant heaters ) as well as normal yearly oil change / filters etc. I pulled safely off the road, shut down and proceeded back to the engine compartment. As I got back to the rear of the bus, I could see heat coming from the Jeep - maybe a little smoke. I unlocked the door and popped the hood. Opened the hood to yellow flame on the driver side of the engine compartment - down low by the wheel. I closed the hood, opened the rear hatch and grabbed the trusty 38 year old dry chemical fire extinguisher, went foreward and opened the hood and put out the fire.
Looking at the Jeep, I saw no dust on the tread of the drivers side front tire, yet the other 3 tires were dusty from pulling off the pavement. My assumption was that the wheel was not rotating. I disconnected the jeep from the bus, started it and backed up another 15-20 feet steering further from the edge of the road. I locked up the Jeep and we proceeded to Avery.

Next day, I caught a ride from my friend Dave, planning to call road service and have the Jeep towed home where I would then get the pickup truck and go back camping. We had several deadlines for the campsite, cleanup for fire safety inspection as well as removing our guest fifth wheel. ( The campground board decided to start enforcing a one RV only rule that had been ignored for years ). Anyway, as we approached the Jeep from the opposite direction (with a Jersey barrier between East and West bound lanes ) I saw someone sitting in my Jeep! We proceeded to a turnaround and came back to the Jeep where I confronted a homeless vagrant who was enjoying the shade sitting in my Jeep having broken the vent window on the passenger side. The fellow was on some kind of drugs but was apologetic and insisted that he did not break the window and he thought the Jeep was a gift for him from the universe. I suggested that he beat feet before the police arrived which he did. I called Coach Net and they sent a tow truck for the Jeep. While I was waiting the CHP and county Sheriff deputy showed up and assured my welfare then went to "interview" the fellow whom they had noticed walking East along the highway.

After we got home from camping, I examined the Jeep. The front wheel was turning fine, the rotor was not discolored. When we loaded the Jeep onto the flatbed tow truck, none of the wheels would spin, it screeched up the ramp. Yes, transfer case was set in neutral and the Ebrake was off. When unloading we rocked the Jeep a bit and it rolled happily back off the deck of the truck onto the driveway. The fire had destroyed the wiring along the driverside of the block of the motor - Coolant sensor, Knock Sensor and O2 sensor. This wiring could be fixed and the sensors replaced and that might be all that is needed to get the motor running again ( it would no longer start ). My concern was for the drivetrain, which is as near as I can tell broken. Certainly not freewheeling with transfer in neutral.

I have contacted the insurance company - the Jeep is covered with comprehensive - and am working through their slow process to get the claim settled. It will probably be totaled. In the mean time - not wanting to delay road trips and camping, we bought a 2007 Honda CR-V to use as a tow car. The towbar adapter plate and wiring kit arrives Monday and I am working on getting a quote for installation of an M&G braking system. I am also researching disabling the steering wheel lock so that I do not need to have the key in the Honda to tow it - the Jeep was set up that way and it was quite convenient. I know I will need to start the motor and run it a few minutes every 8 or so hours of towing, but I generally don't want to drive more than 4 or so hours at a stretch anyway, so no real problem there.

It never seems to get boring, eh?

That sounds exciting.

What brake system was in the Jeep?
