Default ZF Ecomat 2 transmission question

I feel bad having to post on your forum, but my motorhome manufacture never sold a model with my current engine/transmission combination and I believe Blue Bird did. I have a 1986 Newell that came with a Detroit 8V92 and Allison HT740. Long story short, the 8V92 died. I bought a 2001 Orion transit bus with a Cummins ISM and ZF Ecomat 2 transmission. I live in Boise Idaho, the swap is taking place in Missouri. I got a message from the mechanic and I'm not sure how to answer and I'm hoping someone on this forum does.

"There is an air cylinder thing on the pass side of trans with an air hose hanging off of it and we haven't found how much psi is supposed to have going to it."

Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
jon

Call ZF in Vernon Hills, Illinois. That is the North American headquarters. They have excellent customer support, if you have your serial number it may be helpful. There is also Precision Transmission in Colmar, PA. I may be wrong about the town. You should probably try ZF first ask for tech support.

That air cylinder thing is used for the transmission retarder. There are also a couple of air solenoids on the transmission that redirect oil. It should have no air going to it if the retarder is not engaged. I'm guessing this part will not be compatible with your bus unless you setup all the parts required to have the retarder work. Maybe your old Alison transmission did not have a retarder or it's electrically operated.

Retarder is air operated, I do not know the air pressure, but have never had a problem or have known of an air regulator to control pressure.
Bob Esswein is a forum member, call him at ZF Precision Transmission.

Thank you for the information. I have passed all the information on to my mechanic and hopefully won't need to bug you fine people anymore.

The only fee for posting here is a follow-up , we like to hear the outcome.
Pictures are also great, Hang around long enough and you may get an appetite for Bluebirds.

You guys are awesome, thank you! I've been cruising on your forum for some time, downloaded all the ZF documents relevant to my coach. I love the fact that so many of you are into what I consider retro coaches.

My mechanic has the throttle working, not getting the ZF to shift yet, but that's a start!
