Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Engine Oil Temperature Sender

Hi All,

I haven’t been able to locate the engine oil temp sender on my ‘84 FC. I’ve been searching around the bottom and in the area around the oil cooler without success. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Oil pan sump is the preferred location, ports on back of engine oil heat exchanger will work too.

I had another look. Other than the drain plug, I have no ports in my sump.

I did locate a port on the side of the oil cooler but was greeted by coolant when I loosened it. Just to clarify, are their also supposed to be ports on the oil cooler facing the rear of the bus?

Thanks!

Upper and lower ports rear facing are oil in my experience.

I recently put a new connector on my oil temp sender. It's located on the rear facing edge of the oil cooler, top port. The bottom port has a short hose that goes to a manifold for the low oil pressure sensor, oil pressure sender and the oil pressure switch that activates the Facet fuel pump. I recently removed this manifold and resealed all of the connections because it was seeping oil and generally wet.

Jeff - Thanks for the specific description.

With Mike & Jeff's direction, I located the upper port with ease this morning. Mine contained a plug/bolt, no sensor. I had overlooked it in my search for the existing sensor, which seems to have been removed from my bus at some point. It's no longer a mystery why the original gauge didn't register.

For those that may find this of use in the future, I installed the new engine oil temperature sender in the upper port of the oil cooler as pictured below. The photo was taken from behind the cooler looking towards the front of the bus. The oil cooler is on the driver's/street side of the 3208. Finally, I hooked up the new wire I had ran previously, when I installed the new gauge.

Parts used:
- VDO Gauge Kit: 310-1061 (Contained VDO gauge 310-106 and the required temperature sender & fittings)
- a length of wire and a connecter to wire it up, as pictured

It's nice to have all the gauges working again. Thanks to all for the help!

Trent,

Thanks for the write up and pictures.
My gauge hasn't registered since I got the coach.
Now I know where to look.

Make sure your bird doesn’t have a switch for the o temp sensors/readings. Mine has a three way switch that is off in the middle; oil temp to the other side and transmission oil temp on the other side.
