Smile Towing and MPG

I have always been under the impression that towing did not affect a Bluebirds MPG much if any.

I have been traveling with a Prevost with an 8V92 just like me. He is using less fuel. About 40 gallons less fuel per 1000 miles. Most of our driving has been in mountains with 6 + grades. I am towing and he is not.

Does towing in the mountains extract a greater mpg penalty than towing in the flat lands?

It seems to me that it ought to decrease your mileage more in the mountains, because you are pulling an extra 3500 pounds up the hill.

Just wondering?

Actually, he used about 30 less gallons on a 1100 mile run. I took 200 gallons to his 170 gallons.

At the same speed, we are running the same RPMs, but my turbo boost is slightly higher. I think he was running 5 boost and I was running 6 or 7 boost.

I also think the 40' Bird maybe heavier than his 40' aluminum can.

My first question would be ... How much does that Prevost Weigh?

My estimate is that towing will make about 1/2 mpg especially in the mountains. Maybe even more if you are towing 5,000 or more.

Without a tow, I think 9 mpg would be very possible with a M380. Barry Grim travels without a tow some times with his LXI, wonder what he sees.

He does not know how much less weight his coach is. We have guessed 3-5,000 pounds lighter, because he does not have jacks nor a frame like a Bluebird. If that is true, then I am 6,000 to 10,000 pounds heavier than he is. He will out pull me slightly on the up grade, but I noticed that he downshifts before I do. I think he down shifts about 3 mph lower than I.

I think the 1/2 mpg is a good number. On the steepest mountains, I got 5.3-5.4 mpg. Now in Fairbanks, which is more level, I am showing 5.8-6.0 mpg.

Glad to know I have 9.0 mpg in my future. What is the usable gallons of fuel in the M380?

What is the usable gallons in a 93 BB? I need 1500 miles from Tok to Prince George, where fuel is $.99 liter.

I ran my 2000 down to 50 gallons once and clogged my racket filter. The prevost has a 250 gallon tank with only 200 gallons usable.

But remember Barry has that fancy-schmancy LPG injection system.

Default Towing and MPG

Which way did you go up to Alaska?
Why don't you come down the Cassiar Hwy, stop in Stewart and Hyder.
Fuel in Smithers is like 1.10 litre.
