USA Today is saying that Dodge is going to introduce a 1500 Diesel Pickup this fall and bring back the Jeep Diesel.

Problem is the emissions in the US are WAAAY stricter than in Europe so don't hope to get the same mileage they are getting over there. My 2007 dodge 3500 4x4 dually got 19-20mpg without even trying...2011 gets 17 with EGR unplugged and 15 with all emissions hooked up...ridiculous.

DuWayne, we removed the cat, muffler and the DPF from our 2011 Ram 3500, disabled the EGR and put 5" exhaust straight through. Used a controller, it is set at 420hp, and added a fresh air intake. 20 mpg no problem, 15 pulling the car trailer.
We have a 2008 Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 MB diesel, tons of power and 26mpg (hardly girlie, even though it is Lyn's car)

On a brand new vehicle, it might not be that bad. The new method for controlling pollution in diesel engines involves adding a urea based solution to the exhaust that then allows catalyst converters to process the emissions. As a result, much of the pollution control is removed. For example, my Sprinter Van base Roadtrek has 32 more HP and 45 more Ft-Lbs torque compared to the very same engine used without the "blue-tec" technology. Rated fuel economy is about the same as the older engine.

This gives manufacturers the choice of improving fuel economy or increasing power when they convert engines to the new pollution technology.

Note: The urea solution is used very slowly. I got about 8000 miles from the first "tank" (about 3.5 gallons). The "diesel juice" is now widely available in autoparts stores, so there's little difficulty in finding it when needed.

They are starting to test here so i couldn't go that route

Be careful removing emissions equipment that the EPA mandates...

SEC. 205. CIVIL PENALTIES.
(a) Violations.─ Any person who violates sections 203(a)(1), 203(a)(4), or 203(a)(5) or any manufacturer or dealer who violates section 203(a)(3)(A) shall be subject to a civil penalty of not more than $25,000. Any person other than a manufacturer or dealer who violates section 203(a)(3)(A) or any person who violates section 203(a)(3)(B) shall be subject to a civil penalty of not more than $2,500. Any such violation with respect to paragraph (1),(3)(A), or (4) of section 203(a) shall constitute a separate offense with respect to each motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine. Any such violation with respect to section 203(a)(3)(B) shall constitute a separate offense with respect to each part or component. Any person who violates section 203(a)(2) shall be subject to a civil penalty of not more than $25,000 per day of violation.

The odds of getting caught are pretty slim, but if you do the state and federal fines can be really steep. If you were caught outside of your home state you may be stuck there until you bring the vehicle back into compliance and pay the fines.
