Tell Us Where You're At As you travel around the country, why not take the time to tell our members where you have settled for the night, week, or month. There may be another member close by, that would like to meet you, so put that information right here.

Default BBirdMaps new feature / BBirdMaps Reminder

(also sent as e-mail to registered BBirdMaps members)

John Ely suggested that it would be nice to have members who offer electrical hookups or who are able/willing to offer assistance to other Bird owners highlighted on the BBirdMaps in a color other than yellow.

I agreed that it was a good idea, although it was not particularly simple, since mappoint does not have a method for changing highlight color. I ended up drawing the circles myself, which means they aren't transparent, but that also makes them bolder which is good.

If you want to be shown either way, those options now exist on the location submission form.

Electric hookup will be shown with green highlighting, and Member Help will have cyan highlighting. I did not try to include an option for both, so choose whatever is most appropriate. In either case it would be good to provide some detail in your note, and probably include a phone number.

What is needed is a printable list by state of all members that are willing to provide a place to park, type of hookup, tools if available, substitute driver if needed in an emergency, phone number both house and cell, address.

Then we can print it out and keep it in the coach when travelling. We also need a printable list by state of good repair shops that members use or have checked to print out and keep in the coach.

This may not be by state, but we already have something similar on the forum see;

I have produced a (free) App for Android devices that makes it easy to get your GPS location and submit it to BBirdMaps.com

You can download it from the Android Market by searching using the word BBirdMaps or if you have a barcode app installed you can scan this QR Code:

A page with full explanation and screenshots can be found here: http://www.bbirdmaps.com/bbandroidmapsubmit.cfm

Comments and bug reports welcome.

Default BBirdMaps Reminder

It's been awhile since anyone mentioned BBirdMaps, and whenever a gap like this happens the number of Bird owners shown on the map declines slowly. So, this is a reminder to check to see if you are listed, and if not, renew your listing by going to http://www.bbirdmaps.com/whereiam.cfm

If you are not already signed up, you can read about it here: http://www.bbirdmaps.com/AboutBBirdMaps.cfm or register here: http://www.bbirdmaps.com/regform.cfm

The map is most valuable when there are lots of members on it. You can set an expiration of up to 30 days, but all listings will expire in order to keep from perpetuating non-existing locations. Renewing your location when you haven't moved is just a couple of clicks, since the listing form remembers all of your past info.

I've noted a handful of bbirdmaps links in signatures that point to expired locations, so if you use a link be sure to check to see that it is active.

No problem if somebody wants to develop something, but it won't be me.

One of my members at DatastormUsers has done some Mac and iPhone stuff for the users there, but I don't know if his iPhone map utility ever made it out of beta. See http://www.datastormusers.com/ubb/ul.../t/000198.html

Whatever he has would probably be easy to adjust to BBirdMaps, since I set them both up in similar fashion.

Don, I have tried a couple of times to download the Android app by way of scanning the QR code and following the instructions you have posted in the past. Once the code scans it reveals a link to market://search?q=pname:combbirdmaps.mapsubmit and asks if I want to open the browser. When I open the browser I get a message telling me there are no results found. Am I missing a step? Any hints for a tech challenged user?

UPDATE: I just figured it out. The app isn't compatible with my device. I have the Motorola Bionic. When I looked at Google Market I fould the BB app, but when i attempted to download it to the device the error message popped up.
