Default Kubota Starter

Sort of off topic, but I saw something important about my Kubota/Powertech genny during servicing this week.

My oil pressure sender was going south with a serious leak. John Boy Hughes at Coachcraft had to remove the starter to get the new sender installed. When he removed the starter, the area where it goes into the engine was filled with thick, greasy and caked dirt/dust. The starter spline was likewise caked with the same dirt/dust. According to John Boy, this is not uncommon. The long lasting reliability of the Kubota negates removal of some components for inspection/service. My genny is OEM and was installed in 1993. My guess is the starter has never been removed.

The dust is sucked into the starter from the rear via the generator, according to John Boy.

The starter is easy to remove and those of us with long lasting Kubotas might consider removing the starter and cleaning it and the connection point.

John Boy says the later models, with the generator in the front and the engine in the rear don't fall prey to this condition.
