Default SP 36,3208 Cat

At the shippy rally i was talking to Clueless Dave about SPs,he says his runs hotter than he thinks it should.
That got me thinking (i never sleep)
And since i have a SP36 here that i'm working on,and since i have the rad out and the CAC out and the fan blade off i decided to do some looking around.
My fan is old, worn out and has some bent blades, and dang is it heavy!

So a few years back i called the fan guy from here on WOG and got a fan from him,and i remember Finn and Mike H also getting fan blades from him.

So,i called him up,told him my story and gave him size, part number and all that stuff on the blade i have.
He has this new 9 blade fan, plastic, way lighter which will take a load off the belts, the fan clutch and the starting of the lade when the clutch kicks in,and it has (besides one more blade) way more (technical term) surface area on each blade.
This is one bad dude fan blade.
I will get pics (or Carol will) and show this to you guys.
This fan and shipping was less than $200.
So if you have any cooling issues at all,you should consider this blade.

They have blades for the FCs too.
And anything else you can think of,and i had it in 3 days.

I found parts of an old fan blade in the fan shroud on this coach,so it made me wonder just how long those old metal blades last?
$200 is cheap insurance...

Default SP Fan

Randy,

Great tip!
What's the contact info? The place in Michigan?
I have a chip out of the tip of a blade on my current plastic fan so planning on replacing it soon.

Since you're working on an SP now I wonder.....
Because the CAC is alongside the radiator could adding electric fans on the outside of CAC, running independent of the engine fan help control exhaust gas temperature? Think that would work or would it mess up the air flow for the radiator?

You could switch them on when the engine's at 190 and EGT is 900+ to cool just the air.

Since I replaced my old 3208, I watch temps very closely. As I travel at highway speed or hill climbing speed my coolant temp cycles between 180 and 195 which are the set points on both the thermostats and the Horton fan clutch. Up and down even when climbing. This cycling occurs UNTIL

Until (depending on humidity or precipitation) the ambient temperature gets around 85F or higher. At this point the temp no longer cycles unless I'm coasting. It gradually increases sometimes to my personal 205 action level. When it is 85ish outside, I need to disable my retarder in stop and go traffic.

Out west with the long grades, this is really evident. In the east where you climb and then coast down, its not as worrisome. If you really want to worry, stop guessing and get a digital gauge.

I've tried several remedies, and continue to look for where the engine replacement crew may have hooked up a coolant line wrong. For now in the summer we just park on our lot in a Fancy Michigan RV park, take some short trips into other parts of Gods country, and fish for trout every day which isn't so bad.

Randy and I have talked about this fan, and I'm getting one. Don't think it could hurt. Thanks Randy.

I’ve got a plastic fan for a 6-92 that I used in my search for cooling. I didn’t need as much as this fan put out so I put a closer to stock configuration plastic fan back on. It needs a new home and I’ll take it to WOG. If you don’t like it I’ll take it back.

Call Larry with your fan diameter and center hub dimensions (29 and 2 for me). The info can be found in the following link...
