Default Air filter upgrade

Has anybody upgraded the SP36/Cat 3208 Turbo air filter? Since filter technology has changed dramatically in 30 years, I am considering redesigning the the air intake and installing a high performance, washable filter. Since I cut the muffler off and straight piped it, the performance and MPG increased. If the air intake could give it more air, logically the same result should happen. It would breathe better. Any thoughts?

The engine bay is pretty tight on the SP.
I do agree with the filter being restrictive and the small inlet louver on the side of the bus is pretty small too.
Finding a spot to put a better filter will be tough.

I have modded several coachs air filters and i found that the higher you can place the air inlet the cleaner the filter, and the longer it lasts.

I'm not a fan of sticky filters, and during the years i spent selling stuff at FMCA conventions i got to waste a bunch of time talking to the diesel engine people,Detroit,Cat,Cummins.
Lots of this time wasted was listening to owners of motorhomes asking questions.
One question was common,"what about sticky filters"?

All of the engine people said "NO STICKY FILTERS".

Sticky being any washable filter that needs to be soaked with oil.

Randy, I agree with you on the wet filters, which brings to mind a question. If it rains into the air vent on the side of the coach, what happens to the water? The vent is sealed on the backside, then runs directly into the filter, so it appears that it would run into the air filter. ???

Some of the air filters have a drain in the can.
That filter the SP uses is restrictive, and the side louvered vent is too small and restrictive.
What to do to fix it?

Put a Vacuator Valve P149099 (Duck Bill Drain) on the bottom of the filter can.

I was thinking about putting a hood scoop over the vent. It would stick out about 4-5" and would route the air directly into the filter, much like a ram air system. I could paint it to match the coach. The water is what worried me. Every time I wash the coach, which is frequent, I am concerned where the water goes when it hits that vent.

There is a company in ABQ that will custom make a filter can, with filter, that would allow much more air intake. The vacuator valve it seems would cure the water problem. I am taking them an old filter on Monday to see what they can come up with.

Those oil soaked filters like k&n are terrible. Good way to ruin a diesel engine.

Does the SP use the same filter as a FC ? Who in ABQ can build this I’m interested also.
