Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Wrist Pin Failure

As I was browsing the forums and making odd comments, I read where Lucas posted right before selling Good Ole Bird that the remanufactured 3208T with around 60k had suffered a #3 wrist pin failure. I spoke to him about this and he said that he suspected an intermittent misfire on that cylinder to be the cause and after repairs and rebuilt injectors she should be good. The current owner says she runs perfect. I'm about to drive this Bird 1700 miles back to the bayou...

Can you 3208 gurus elaborate on this sort of failure ??

Mike? I put down the pipe...

So, I'm going to assume that thermal overload of the piston may of occured due to abnormal injector spray thus resulting in wrist pin failure. Can a 3208 sustain something like this without a total rebuild, assuming it was caught early ??

Should I just change the oil and run it ??

Or maybe it was a failed aftermarket part, or assembly error ??

It's been running Delo 15w40... maybe that's the cause...

Default Good Ole Bird

The mileage on the coach was just under 108000 when I sold it.

I doubt the wrist pin bushings were properly serviced. Not an easy or cheap process on a turbo engine Cat. I won't do an engine job with out sending the connecting rods to the local Cat house for refreshing.

Default Wrist pin

The work was done by an Caterpillar mechanic with me as a helper. The rod, piston, rings, gaskets, wrist pin and bushing were replaced with cat house parts. The surprise was Caterpillar gave a refund on the rebuildable used rod. Parts were close to $1000.00
