Good idea!! Unless the wiring is burned from the front to the back, there is no reason in the world why it should need to be replaced! I've never had issues with the Blue Sea products and I'm guessing that the mechanic does not understand how it works. Anyone who did would never replace it with an isolator of all things. That's like replacing an iPad with a Commodore 64

The shop I am at wants to replace both alternators as I am (of course) not getting enough power when coach is under load. I have to go 1480 miles to get the coach home.
Question: Should I have them replace none, one or both? If I were to be able to run the generator while driving, is there anything special I need to do to have it charge the batteries other than turn it on?

Question: Does anyone have part numbers, sources for alternators for 1988 PT40 WB?

Getting a little stir crazy here in TX waiting for generator water pump and Fuel solenoid and at this point they don't even know what type/size of alternator they need!).

Thanks!
Terri

When my alternator failed I just cranked up the generator and charger while driving. It was a couple of days before I got a replacement alternator and arrived at a place I could install it. (Rick Davis' place).

Terri

Terri.

With the generator running, 110 volts will power the entire Bird, including the onboard battery charger

The alternators are just J180 mount truck alternators. They are everywhere. I did replace one of mine with
http://www.prestolite.com/pgs_produc...esh=1321414342.
A little nicer than some. Better for the bad conditions I operate in.

I would run home on the genny, then find someone I really trust to replace them if needed. There are many reasons why they won't charge the batteries. Bad connections, etc.

PS. Keep an eye on the battery voltage. The engine will shut down below about 11.8 Volts, due to the ECM shutting it down.

Bill, thanks for the info. Makes me feel a little more sane.

Jon, I live in Miami, FL...I don't trust anyone down there to work on my car let alone the bus!
On another note, I told my husband about your RV Resort and it being in Maggie Valley...he is definitely enthused about going back to Maggie Valley and I will make sure we stay at your place! If I ever get the bus home that is.

Thanks for the part number for the alternator.

When heading home to FL you may want to head a little further east and contact Hollywood (Diesel Jim 386-846-6655). This is the guy you want to tackle your alternator situation. He is in Daytona and comes highly recommended by several people here on the forum.
Let me know if I can help in any way. KC 386-873-4496

Thanks KC! You're the best! I think I am going to stay with the guys here in San Antonio til they get the install done. I really don't want the bus keeling over in the middle of Houston or anywhere else for that matter. But if I have any trouble on the way home I just may stop in Daytona.

Terri
