Default Most Frequently Asked Questions About Your 'Bird

Here is a partial ongoing list of the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Your 'Bird, that is especially helpful for the new or prospective 'Bird owners and can also come in handy as a refresher for the veteran owners too. Some of these are from the archives of the old yahoo forum and some are from various web sites. In order to access the ones found in the archives of the old Yahoo forum you have to be a member of that forum, which is very easy to do by going to http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/wanderlodge/

If you have an additional question that you have the answer for that can be added here, just post them as a reply to this Thread so that we can keep updating this list

I am considering buying an older FC and want to know what would it take to put a different engine in it
If you have a good running 3208 and you want to know what it costs to change out the engine and what the costs and issues are, save yourself the headache (and money) and buy a newer bird. Before considering “open heart” surgery on a ‘bird with a good running 3208NA consider the fact that even the simplest solution of upgrading to a 3208 turbo is not an inexpensive proposition. Considering the value of a ‘bird of the NA vintage an engine swap can run into a large percentage of the total value. Now if the 3208NA is “bad” then by all means install a reman 3208 turbo. In fact replacing a “bad” NA with a 3208 turbo is almost a given in many opinions.

I can't seem to locate a replacement filter for my 'Bird, where can I find one?
Use these filter manufacturers cross reference links to find the proper filter for your 'Bird, by entering the old filters part number, that should be either printed, or stamped on it somewhere. Then take both the old filter and the new part number to your local NAPA, CARQUEST, or other heavy duty parts store and they should be able to find you a replacement

I have bought or am thinking about buying a ‘bird with the 3208NA engine. What can I do to get more power?
First of all you will never make a speedster out of it, just learn to enjoy the scenery in the right hand lane. There are things that you can do however to help maintain its speed such as adding more air to the engine ( http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/...0modification/), make sure you have clean fuel and air filters and by adding an electric fuel pump back by the tank if yours doesn’t already have one. Needless to say it needs to be in good tune such as valve adjustment and so forth. These things again help the old ‘bird maintain speed on rolling hills but just get used to the fact that in the mountains she is going to be slow. My attitude is that I am satisfied with the performance as far as my needs go. If I am not satisfied then it is time to get a later model ‘bird with a bigger engine and consequently much more money. If anyone considers that the older FC’s in good condition are one of the best bargains out there then lack of speed in the mountains is by far offset by the other attributes of the earlier Wanderlodge. In good tune you can sit on 65 mph all day on flatter land and gently rolling hills such as in the south.

I just got a diesel fuel bath while filling up my 'Bird, how can I prevent this from happening?
This is a very common problem with 'Birds of almost any year and model, it is usually caused by air pressure building up inside the tank as the tank is getting full of diesel fuel. the air vent on some 'Birds is too small to relieve this air that is trying to escape, because it cannot keep up with the high volume pumps that are normally found at truck stops now days. I used to wrap a old towel around the nozzle before I placed it into the filler neck, to prevent any fuel from spilling over as the tank filled up and splashed back, but now I use a FuelKleen Splash Absorbing Collar Fits around fuel filler neck and instantly catches fuel before it can spill. FuelKleen has been designed to catch drips and splashes from fuel filling nozzles. FuelKleen collar can be reused until it is fully saturated. There are also some devices made that fit into the tank that will help relieve the pressure build up and also some 'Bird owners have enlarged the air vent line that comes off of the top of the tank, to help vent this pressure build up. On 'Birds equipped with dual filer necks on either side, opening the opposite side fuel filler cap, will help relieve this pressure.

I need to find some information about either the Caterpillar or Detroit Diesel engine in my 'Bird, where do I go?
You can first try asking a question about it on the forum and if that doesn't help, try one of the manufacturers web sites, for instance Caterpillar has an excellent RV Engines hotline number to call for information, even for the 3208's

I understand that I have a RACOR fuel filter on my 'Bird, how do I change the filter in it?
The RACOR is the filter that screens the bigger impurities from your diesel fuel while on the way to your main engine. Its location depends on the model of 'Bird that it was installed on. Here Jay Darst gives a detailed description of how he changes the filter in his RACOR housing. Be sure to read all of the other replies, there is a lot of good information about the RACOR filter found there.

I'm having problems getting my Propane tank filled at some stations, what can I do?
There seems to be some confusion or misinterpretation of the code concerning onboard propane tanks that do not have an OPD (Overflow Protection Device) installed on them, which gives a cause for some propane filling stations to refuse to fill them. This link will take you to a PDF file that hopefully will help to clear this issue up. You can save it to your hardrive on your computer and also print a copy of it to carry with you and by showing it to the filling station attendant may change their mind about not filling your tank.

I'm thinking about purchasing a used 'Bird, is there any guide that will help me check this thing out before I pay for it?
Here is a link to a CHECKLIST that you can print out and take with you, that is an excellent guide of what to look for on a used 'Bird, it is located on the VINTAGE 'BIRDS web site, I took a copy with me when I flew from South Carolina to Texas to purchase my 'Bird, I also was given some names of forum members to help me check this thing out, as I was not familiar with all of the systems on a 'Bird and the gentleman that helped me was very knowledgeable and he wouldn't take any fee for doing so, other than his meals and he spent an entire day with me. There are also forum member that will for a fee, will go to where your potential 'Bird is located at and do a complete check up and then give you a written inspection report on that 'Bird that you are thinking of buying, just post a question about that on the forum and you should get a reply from one of them.

One of my air conditioners stopped working all of a sudden, where should I start looking
At the air conditioners, I always leave the controls in the on position and I know that I have had my air conditioners either stop or start when I hadn't turned them on or off at the air conditioners myself and what I found out was I had inadvertently bumped the wall switch next to the drivers seat that control the air conditioners on my '82 FCRB model 'Bird. You can see the three wall switches in this photo of my drivers seat, they are located just below the window and there are three of them, one for each air conditioner on my 'Bird. I believe that some model 'Birds the switches were moved to somewhere in the overhead panels, which helped elevate this problem, but they still can be bumped with a shoulder or a misplaced hand with the same results.

is there a safe in my 'Bird, if so where is it located and how do I open it
I found the safe in my 'Bird an '82 FCRB model, under the dinette seat cushion. I had to remove the wooden panel that was covering it and since I had no combination for it, I took the 'Bird to a local locksmith and he opened it for me, then I had the combination reset to a number that I could remember. This link will take you to a post that Curt Springer contributed, describing how to properly use the combination and dial on the safe in order to open it.

Default How Do I find A Manual For My 'Bird

We have quite a list of different Manuals for the different years and models of Blue Birds that were and still are being contributed by the members of the Wanderlodge Owners Group Forum and various other sources, feel free to to copy them for your personal use, a partial list can be found by going to;

Wanderlodge Owners Group > Frequently Asked Questions > Manuals and Files Stored in This Forums Software DATABASE > Index of Downloaded Manuals and Files in Forums Software Database

The complete list can be viewed at;

These files are uploaded using the files original title, which sometimes doesn't give the full content of the file itself, but only an abbreviated name, so some research has to be done by opening a file to see what the actual content is and some of these files are quite large and can take considerable time to download and /or open, depending on your Internet connection and the speed of your computer, so keep that in mind when using them. Some of the files do not have the size indicated at the end of their listing.

Rather than opening a large file directly from the link, it is quicker to save a file to your computer by placing the cursor over the files TITLE/NAME and then right click and from the drop down list choose "Save Target As" then choose where on your computer that you want to save the file and then click "SAVE", then open the file from your computer. Be sure to check the other messages/posts in the Index of Downloaded Manuals and Files in Forums Software Databasethread for more items downloaded into the database.

If you have a file that you would like to have saved in our Database just contact me at iamflagman@aol.com and I'll inform you about how to get that file listed.
