Racor Gauge in Red - Cold Fuel?

I would wait until spring.
If,IF,i was going to change the filter i would run the engine until it was good and warm,then change the filter and start it right back up.

But,i have a question for you,have you changed filters before?
If its that cold,its not a good time to learn about fuel filter changes!

This might be silly, but are you talking about the clear part of the canister the filter is in? And I do believe we have a twist off kind like on Finn's.

Maybe I'm confusing myself.

The racor filter looks just like Finn's and it's in our propane bay.
That other white filter thing in his pictures, not in there so guessing that is somewhere else.

makes me feel a bit better that it can wait if that's the case.

We do want to take it to AR over Thanksgiving so maybe getting down into warmer weather will make the gauge move.

We drove it yesterday, put the engine block heater on for a bit, started right up, let it warm up for a bit and off we went. Seemed to drive fine, just that gauge was in the red.

NO, never done something like this. We are in uncharted territory.

Normal vehicles like are trucks, ya....but not this.

Make sure to fill the Racor housing right to the top.

I like Randy's idea of doing it with a warm engine, but I don't know about driving far in the red. I have been lazy a couple of times, when mine went up high toward red, or even in the red, and paid for it. Having to stop and change it somewhere weird, even on the side of a two lane, no shoulder, on a 10 below day. And that brings up cold.

Cold will make the reading higher until the fuel warms, but you shouldn't see red. If you are seeing red due to cold, I suspect gel. Get some anti gel and add it to the tank, and run the engine.

FYI The fuel circulates. Extra fuel is returned to the tank. It has picked up some heat from the engine.

That advice is worth what you paid for it.

I often operate in below zero temps.

In general Matthew, Birds, like most of their owners, don't like cold weather. As you correctly noticed, strange symptoms may present themselves when the temps drop, and disappear when the Bird warms up. Just part of the learning curve. Enjoy your new addition!

Heat gun can do more than help remove paint. Heat the spin on filter.

oh yes, learning curve indeed.

And....this is Tina, Matthew hasn't been on at all. I relay the info I find or get to him though. I even read the posts out load. I found the forum after I decided what kind of motorhome we wanted and joined. So I'm the one asking the silly questions and such. LOL.

Tina, I recommend you get a filter and carry it with you. When my son got married I took off alone (husband in France on business). Packed the bus with tools, etc... Took the filter 'just in case'. Ended up needing to change it on the way home coming through CT. in a truck stop! Thankful I had packed a small bucket to fit under it. Enjoy your trip to AR.
