Default Onan 8KW Bad Starter Switch

On our recent Canada trip we had issues with the Onan starting switch on the generator control box. All indications were the generator would start and run for 5 - 10 minutes and it would die. That gave me an indication that it was a high temp or maybe an low oil sensor switch, Then one time when I got it running I had no gauge readings, no oil pressure, no water temp or battery reading, so I thought it was the back connector that had jiggled loose. It was loose but even after tightening the connection it still would not run for more than 10 minutes. We stopped at Jim Doel's and his mechanic put the volt meter to it and we had power to the fuel pump, power to the glow plugs and he checked the pins on the connector plug and we had power to all the right pins. Then he noticed that as long as he held the start switch tightly in his hand not mounted to the control box it would run but when he let go it would shut down. The old switch had expanded from heat we guessed and the contacts would seperate and it would not allow the juice to flow. So without a new switch he taped it tight and wrapped it with water hose and it has been running whenever require ever since. If you go to the parts manual the switch identified is no longer available but this is the new number for the replacement. Onan 0308-0852 I now own 2 I bought off ebay. I'll replace the old switch tomorrow.

I just got back from replacing the old start switch on the Onan & when I got the old one out I could see the housing of the switch flex as I held it and twisted it. It would not take long for it to fall apart. I have a new one installed and I also have a spare for my spare bus as Fran calls it. Always buy two whenever they're cheap

Glad you got it sorted out John, and happy that we were able to lend some "Ottawa Valley low tech" assistance. It was great seeing you and Fran and we look forward to seeing you guys at RATS.
