Default Dash Air - Help me fill in some electrical blanks

Took a trip this weekend and Robin was complaining of too much cold air from the dash. Nice problem. It is intermittent however. When it works, it is great, other times, plenty of wind but no cold. Seems to work fine when it is first turned on, but if it is warmed up, will not work again until it rests or "cools down" a while. Other times, won't work at all.

I am assuming it is an electrical problem, likely a relay that overheats and won't switch back on. It is a little challenging because the wiring diagrams are all segmental by location rather than of the complete system.

Here's what I've tried so far: It was working first thing this AM and I was able to find the "big" relay in the overhead. It is a silver box rather than a cylinder type. The switching wire had 12 volts. I exchanged it for a brand new cylinder type. Turned it on, got a nice satisfying clack from the relay and cold air. Ran for a while, then turned it off and would not work again. Now no 12V at the switching wire. There is also a Bosch type relay spliced to the switch wire and it clicks at the same time so I swapped it out also. No luck. Checked all the circuit breakers in the overhead and all had voltage coming out. Pulled the dash and swapped the driver's and passenger's fan switches. The "constant on" wire terminal for the fan was dangling by a couple of strands and I thought I had a winner, but not so. I've got 12 volts at the terminal. Still not working, no 12V at relay.

I need some hints as to which other components to check and where they live.

Will that keep me from getting juice to relay? How do I check it?

John,

Try to intermittently touch the clutch connection terminal with a direct 12 volts,
you should see and / or hear it engage.

Worked fine this AM, then quit later. I was taking her in to the shop for a couple of other issues and told the foreman about it. He said the thermostat control is a common problem due to burned contacts and he'll check that first. Mine sits to the far left in the overhead.

My thermostat switch is just a little box with a tube coming out that runs into the air handler. I don't have one of those fancy temp control switches, I just get to control the wind chill factor.
