Opinions as of 7/2011 arising from experiences in the thread “LA Saga”
Greater LA area -
William 818 384 2319 Excellent - LA – Arleta area: Would you rather pay a competent mechanic $20/hour direct, or the extra $100/hour to cover the costs a shop incurred getting you to drop in? Here’s your chance if you’re in SOCAL: William 818 384 2319 is based a bit south of where 5 and 405 intersect, but he makes house calls. Diesel and electrical was what he did for me. He’s not into the complexities of RVs, but has experience maintaining a fleet of trucks. Enlisting his services was a throw-back to my younger days when without money to speak of in Vista Corps I found mechanics willing to have me participate in their repairs, thus enabling me to learn my vehicle. (Most shops forbid this experience . . . . “Insurance” . . . . etc etc etc ad infinitum, except you have to pay extra for this. - How do I come to quote $20/hour? I happened upon William next to where my bus wouldn't start. I asked him to help, and he quoted me $150 whether he succeeded in fixing it or not. So he removed the starter, tested it, noted it was good but the selonoid was not. He then drove me to a shop he knew of that could order my uncommon solenoid. He drove me back there a few days later to pick it up. He installed it and the bus was back in business. $150. - I then asked him about doing some more. He quoted $150 for a whole day. And he worked all day on my bus and dealt with a bunch of issues I presented. That's how I come to quote $20/hour. So be realistic.
A-One Auto Center – Don’t bother – LA in Gardena area. If you your problems are electrical and you don’t speak Korean, forget it.

Greater San Diego area:
Holland Motor Homes - Useless : in northern San Diego, though much touted by some, was absolutely useless to me as somebody who hadn’t previously endowed them with a munificient sum purchasing one of their coaches.
RV Specialists 858 455 9898- Very good in San Diego near La Jolla, to whom I was referred by Holland, charged the typical $110/hour for a competent down-to-earth tech Ray who allowed me to watch and learn my vehicle.
Broadway Auto Electric - San Diego, Lemon Grove area - This place is immensely popular with locals, but don't come in with anything complex: They will hang you out to dry forever and feel no guilt.
