Default Still no juice 12.5kw kohler

I have been trying for several weeks now to get the generator in my bird running. Her is what I have done.

Checked to see if their is voltage at the control box for the exciter current. there was 8v dc on the pin that the schematics indicated was exciter current.

cleaned the brushes and rotor

Put in a new voltage regulator.

Still no AC

Does anyone know if 8v is enough to start the ac field??

I'm looking for any other ideas. I have a new control box I ordered from england and thought I could try that but as far as I can read the schematics, as long as the exciter current is there thats the only really important thing that is neede from the control box for ac generation. any help would be great....

If you read my post, I recently installed a Stamford Newage generator on mine. I rebuilt the control box, new contactors, relays etc etc.

If you want to give me a call, lets talk about it.

Default 12.5 Kohler no AC

This is Jim Barone fulltiming in a 1991 WBWL...Let me tell you a little about my experience with a Perkins/12.5 Kohler genset I had in my last boat...same indications...would try to start but not quite get going...read the manual over and over...finally called a tech and he checked everything at the generator end but could find no problems...OK so here is the story...My manual said that a small AC load must be placed on the genset prior to trying to start..such as a 100 watt light...number two check the commutator and brushes and here is the key element..when you pull off the cover that houses the comm and brushes look for a set of brushes that are not apparent immediately...the brushes will be behind a plate that is on the centerline of the rotor shaft but you can't see them without looking very closely..cleaning this invisable set of brushes turned out to be the entire problem...once this was cleaned up the genset started and ran as designed..call me at 256 673 0501 if I can help you or talk you through it.
