Default Some people will steal anything for a little bit of copper!

I was in my local NAPA store today and while chatting with the manager he told me that his neighbor had two A/C units stolen off the roof of his motor home while it was parked in front of his house.
Price of copper and aluminum is high enough they are stealing anything copper or aluminum. Awhile back somebody pulled out the copper wire feeding street lights down the middle of one FREEWAY. Another recent theft was aluminum bleacher seats from a high school stadium.

It happens here all the time with real estate, they will take anything to scrap, copper plumbing, ac units and aluminum flagpoles out of the yard. It has gotten so bad that the city passed an ordinance that the scrap yards have to get copy of driver's license of the seller for any ac unit sold for scrap.

We had a guy back his pickup up to the loading dock and roll a 5,000 lb reel of copper into the bed. Needless to say the truck was in the same spot in the morning. Bent rear axle and broken springs.

This is a system I installed 3 years ago. Looks like it would have been easier to take the whole thing, but they took it apart, stacked parts neatly, and just took the coil. Course they destroyed the compressor and reversing valve in the precess. Cost to replace will be about $2,000, they might get a $100 for the coil.

I give my old units to anyone who want to salvage them out.

A couple of years ago, in S.E. Ohio where I grew up, they were installing cell phone towers....they had to post armed guards 24X7 until they could get them up and secured because thieves wiped out the site twice before they posted the guards.

A friend of mine from high school is the mayor of that small town. He tells me that heroin addiction is fuelling a lot of this activity. Apparently, the cost of heroin has come down so much that it is now "affordable" and addicts will steal anything to get it. It's a crazy world we live in.

I guess new home construction sites have real problems too. Not just copper but any building material is being stolen. Guys have a business remodelling homes and they get their supplies by stealing them from new home sites. Unbelievable!

Hi Mallie,
The same thing happened to us when we purchased our home in FL in March of 2011...We made an offer, it was accepted, the next month we had an inspection, the inspector could not get the A/C to come on, went outside to see condenser, and it was gone!!! Luckily I had pictures and the real estate agent knew there was a condenser there so the owners had to pay for a new one... The thieves took the whole unit... We have it locked down and gated and locked now...

Heroin has made a huge comeback due to the fact OxyContin now cannot be crushed and injected, snorted, smoked as easily anymore. I have seen an increase in teen deaths (OD) in our upscale neighborhoods since the change made to Oxy.

90+% of these types of thefts are dope related.
